iMac CD recognition problem - help

not sure when this started, but it wasn't always like this. i've just started noticing it.

when i insert a cd into the drive, it will recognize it for a couple seconds, then it disappears from the desktop and the iMac no longer recognizes it.

if i immediately re-insert the same cd, it recognizes it and stays doing so.

help?
