This is just a thought since I need a new display, in theory it sounds good, but I can see problems, why I am asking. Could you hook a new Imac up to a Mac Pro and have them both work? Thus using the Imac as a display with some power also. Yep a strange question.....curious.
 
If you use one of the new 2011 iMacs, the Mac Pro would need to have a Thunderbolt port (not just mini-displayport) for that to work. The 2010 27" iMacs can take a plain mini-displayport signal in.
