Hi, I need some help. I have a 24-inch: 3.06GHz iMac that I purchased in June 2008. As of yesterday it has started crashing/locking up without fail after I login; the screen starts distorting and then begins flashing very rapidly and the only option I have is to shut it down by holding the power button. Is there anything I can try before I contact Apple support. Thanks.

Try resetting PRAM. If that doesn't help, boot from your install disk and then Disk Utility -> Repair your permissions. If it still continues, reinstall OS X

Thanks, I tried the PRAM thing to no avail and the iMac isn't stable long enough for me to even try reinstalling OS X. Looks like I'm gonna have to send it away for repairs.

Where exactly does it crash? When you press the power button, does it boot properly and lets you log in? You said it starts when you log in, right? Then you should be able to boot from install disk (hold C while booting).

Yes it boots up fine and lets me login; but as soon as my apps start loading it crashes. When I tried booting from the CD everything froze.

Okay, sounds like defective logic board, so sending it to repair is the wisest and only option now.

    Thanks for the help.

In what seems like a cruel joke, my brother is reporting problems with his iMac. On closer inspection it looks like the internal hd isn't mounting and can't load OS X or be reinstalled.

I swear, if our MacBook dies I'm never buying another Apple machine again.

His HD is dying, that's not a big deal. HDs die all the time, but they are cheap nowadays.

    BTW, do you have AppleCare?

I know it's a relatively minor problem to solve but it shouldn't be happening; it's only a first gen aluminium iMac.

Yes all three are covered by AppleCare. :)

Then you have no problems. Just a call to Apple and everything is up again.
