My iMac is crashing on a regular basis now for the past 24 hours. Sometimes it crashes in Safari unexpectedly and says it is a Safari problem and sometimes it crashes randomly and says it is a OS X problem. I use 10.5.8 and did a software update yesterday. Only Flash and Security needed update.

The only add-on software I have is iAntivirus, iSlysoft Video Converter, iTalk Sync, Cynq, Dropbox, Docs To Go, Flipshare, Handbrake, Silverlight (Netflix), and K9 Security. I also get the random grey shadow screen that makes me do a mandatory restart at times. Sometimes when it reboots it hangs at the Apple screen and sometimes it hangs on the blue screen. It is running okay now. Is it a OSX problem, virus or something, or Safari? Here is the crash report I was told to send. Please help this new mom out. Thanks Mac Einsteins.

If it's a new Mac, call Apple Care. You've paid for the support with the purchase, and they're the best qualified to help.

General rule of thumb is that random problems tend to be hardware related. Though with two security programs running you may have a conflict happening there that may appear to cause random problems. Quite frankly, from what I've read, anti-virus programs on a Mac cause more problems than they solve.

So, if it's hardware you will need to take it into a store.

One way to tell if it's software is to set up a new account (in Settings) - just plain standard account. Then log out of your regular account and into the new account. Don't install any of your software. Safari will be there by default. Do some surfing and give the system a work out (but don't install anything, including extensions). Open up lots of Safari tabs, for instance. Play some movies from Youtube, etc etc

If the system crashes, then it is probably hardware related. If the system is stable, then it's something to do with the software you installed, in all likelihood. And my guess would be the security or the anti-virus packages, but that is just a guess.

    Good Luck.

For what it's worth, when it's running well OS X shouldn't crash at all. The last time I had a grey-screen crash was years ago, and then only because I had installed a lot of silly small programs. Once I reinstalled the OS and added back only the software I really needed I've been crash free, except for hardware problems (once on this notebook, and once on my desktop system).

You're welcome.... we're (for the most part) a nice crowd here.

Try searching for "iAntivirus" in this forum. That will bring up posts from people with experience with it. I've just done a quick scan, and iAntivirus is getting unfavourable reviews. You may want to uninstall it.... but do the search and read the comments for yourself, perhaps.

It's not a virus. No viruses exist in the wild that can run on Mac OS X, and there never have been any, since it was released 10 years ago. The handful of trojans that exist can be easily avoided with some basic education, common sense and care in what software you install:
I recommend you uninstall iAntiVirus. You don't need antivirus software to protect your Mac from malware. Read the link.

Thanks for looking and yes you guys have been great. No belittling..haha. I will uninstall iAntivirus. I am using a guest login and things are just fine now. I wonder which of those other programs I should uninstall like Dropbox, Skype, or Cinq. Thanks

You don't need to uninstall apps you're using. There's a benefit to using those apps. There's no benefit to running antivirus if you exercise care in what software you install.

So the consensus is that iAntivirus is causing the Safari/OSX issues? I sure hope so because I love iSkysoft and Handbreak for videos and Cinq for photos on my iPhone. :)

Would apps that that are installed to work with my phone be causing a problem like Cinq or Dropbox that share the network together? Also do I need the latest OS to run the Mac better?

I wouldn't suspect any problems with Cinq or Dropbox. I also run 10.5.8 and it has been completely stable. I'm also not familiar with K9 Security. You might consider uninstalling that and see if it affects your stability. If it has no effect, you can always reinstall it.

The only effective method for complete app removal is manual deletion:

In theory the best way to diagnose a misbehaving app is to start fresh, and install them one by one - and push the system after each installation - until the problem reappears. That last app is probably the one causing the problems.

In practice, that is a pain in the neck.

On this forum, do a search on each application's name. You will find somebody has had a problem with each and every one... so don't be discouraged. However, if you methodically search each name, and read a little bit of each thread (not all, just scan) you will likely find that one will stand out. Uninstall that application (using the advice GGJstudios has provided - he's a good source of info on these forums, and I trust his advice). With luck your issues will have cleared up. I would also recommend deleting the K9 thing. I know and use Dropbox with no issues, and it has a good reputation. Lots of people use Handbrake with no issues. The others I have no experience with.

Do you have a good backup?
