I have a 2012 iMac 27" and it recently started a problem where the screen would all of a sudden go into a white screen. Lately, it will make a "cracking" sound before it either turns off or attempt to reboot. Usually it will only last a few minutes, 20 minutes tops, functioning normally.
Does this sound like a software or a hardware problem? any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Cracking sound? Hope it isn't about time for the scrap heap.

I think if the hardware is making a noise it makes sense to reason it would be a hardware problem.

That definitely sounds like a hardware issue, and not software. Backup your data just to be safe, and take it into Apple for them to have a look and/or repair.
Thank you for the feedback.

Sounds like graphic card failure, suggest backup and possible Apple store to see if it falls under recall/repair quick. Be sweet and nice and keep asking for someone higher in the food chain until they give in, and they will.

Great lead! Thanks
