iMac doesn't recognise headphones

Hello all,

Just plugged in my iPod headphones and they don't show up in System Preferences. Checked another set of headphones and they don't show up either. Is there a way to check if this is a software issue or a hardware issue? They've been recognised before. Using SL all updated on a new 2011 iMac.
