Hi,

Is it normal for a 2012 iMac 27 3,4 GHz Intel Core i7 to run the fan at 3000-rpm while web browsing or 3600rpm while watching a YouTube video?

I don't remember it acting like this until lately. I've tried to reset the SMC but I'm still hearing the fan running loud.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

do you have any fan control software? Any sensor monitoring daemons?
Yeah I've got those stats from iStat. The highest I've got was 3600 watching a YouTube video and now i'm getting 2200 while browsing the web. Not to bad right now, but at over 3000 it gets annoyingly loud.

Dear sir, google how to run the diagnostic test for mac at first boot, it's something like CMD or CTRL + D. If the results come back with an error code, google the error and if its related to the hdd (harddrive) sensors, have someone who knows something about computers to check and make sure all of the sensor wires are still in place. If one falls off inside the fans will continually run and throw an error. I had a secondary hdd removed from the inside and the fans were running at full speed afterwards. There is a cable they sell at B&H that alleviates this issue, but the fans control app provides the same functionality, if your issue is related to that. Hope this helps.

PS-Also, regardless of whether you use the cable or the app to control the fans, the diagnostics will still throw a sensor error, but you will no longer have the fans running full speed, except maybe during the boot processs before the OS is loaded.

Had the hard drive replaced at all? If so needs a heat sensor kit.
It has but it was done at an Apple authorized dealer a while ago

I did run the test and it found no erros. However, ever during the test the fan was running at full 3600 and continued to do so after I restarted.

That's def not normal. I think i'll contact Apple then.

are you sure it's fahrenheit? 64 Fahrenheit is room temperature..

perhaps extended exposure to full on fans will do that.

Maybe, i'm not sure. Still, it's constantly running high

What does the activity monitor show for CPU as far as percentage when the fan is up?
