MacOS can seem a little daunting at first, but you will quickly realize that everything is very basic. My grandfather who is 80 has had an iMac for 5 years, and has loved it after his many Dells. Plus this forum has great threads for tips and tricks to help you ease into the Apple environment.

P.S. Sorry I'm so late to the thread but I figured I could congratulate you on a perfect purchase for your needs.

Thank-U.

I'm looking forward to the challenge, especially after the "Mini" Fiasco...I have detailed instructions from Apple for transferring my Windows files to iMac that should get me on the right course.

I would like to add the following in addition to what others have said: if you are a military veteran, retired, etc., Apple would offer you a pretty nice military discount that would bring the cost to under $2,000. I used the discount to buy Apple Care. I had a chat with someone at the Apple Store, and he set-up the sale to include a military discount, and emailed the link to me. All I had to do was to use this link to buy the iMac I wanted.

Ah! I am very late responding, and have not options to delete it :)

The Veteran discount was a welcome surprise as I posted up above I canceled 1st order & reordered.

I know this is way OT but Veteran Discounts are available at Lowes & Home Depot on most purchases if ya show proof at the checkout counter.

any way to upgrade to 16GB RAM, I think it's needed for future proofing personally

I'm still catching up in the long RAM thread. Just when I think I know what to order, someone will post something negative and another person something positive about the same brand/version making trying to decide what route to go even more confusing. I want to get the right Ram from the start + an external HD...Researching never ends!!!

A cool (non-standard format) small box. Add APU, RAM, storage, and OS.

Something a little bit bigger would be more flexible.

Note that it supports M.2 NVMe SSDs but not M.2 SATA SSDs. The latter are cheaper but only as fast as 2.5" SATA SSDs.

That format is actually called Mini-STX.

Here's an even rarer and newer format: Micro-STX (2 inches longer). But model from last year:

The fact that these formats and Mini-ITX only have two RAM slots is a turnoff.

Yes to a base model. I'm a big fan of the SSD upgrade over Fusion, too. Editing can bog down in the 1TB Fusion since the SSD is so small.

You don't need a 2019. There are 2017s in the Refurb Store that will give you what you need and are friendlier to your budget.

The Refurb Store is where Apple sells discontinued models such as every 2017 iMac left. All have a full 1 year Warranty. Do spend the additional $169 on AppleCare so that warranty (including phone support!) is extended the full 3 years.
Here are all the 2017 iMacs.

This one hits the sweet spot for $2,719. 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD i7 ... ok, it's more than you need but the price is great.

This one has 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD instead @ $2,289.

Do you need an i7? No but all the i5s in the Refurb Store have Fusion Drives.

I saw once an ASRock Mini-ITX board with four SO-DIMM slots, but it was 4-channel so it was not an upgrade thing.

16GiB is the new basic amount of RAM.

It was the regular amount in 2015.

AW.........Shucks!
Maybe it's not worth to pay more for you, and one would have to check what the Mac actually supports.

Sometimes I prefer to get one step less of frequency if one gains two steps of latency.

I did check...I'm willing to take that risk as others have as well.

I'll spend my money the way I choose and ____________!

The CPU itself would support at least 4000MHz RAM in practice. That does not mean the Mac does.

If they work at top speed, I would get 3000/16 rather than 3200/18 at the current prices.

Good for you.
There is nothing wrong with what you have bought. Will you see faster speeds with faster ram? I Highly doubt it. I also question the poster cube stating that the 16G of ram was the basic amount and was regular amount in 2015. That sentence as it stands by itself makes 0 sense.
What you bought will be fast and I suspect you will be more than satisfied.

People would build a basic PC with 8 GiB RAM in 2015 and a regular laptop would come with 16GiB RAM.

Nowadays Firefox + background tasks will eat like 12GiB RAM.

Much better, stands alone now. And agree on the ram usage.

If you don't use the computer for other than the above tasks, you mind as well just buy a cheap Windows computer. Why throw away money?

I'd buy a $500 Windows computer for the above tasks especially since it appears from your post that you have been using Windows.
