Hi there,

my iMac 27 inch late 2013 is not waking up from sleep properly. Since Saturday night when going to sleep, it does either come up with a black screen (back light though) or with the login screen, but no possibilty to enter the password. I already tried a reinstall (without deleting the data), run the diagnostics test (No results) and SCM Reset etc . I also removed my extra RAM, because I thought it may have something to do with. But nothing helped.

Maybe it does have something to do with the High Sierra update I did last week. I've read around several forums on the web and some people have a similar error since Sierra, but were able to fix it by deactivating the hard drive going into sleep. In my case that did not help.

I hope somebody can help me. I'm really frustrated and I don't know what else to do. (especially cause I'm in my finals week)

Thanks a lot!

Here is a crash report from last night. The Mac went into sleep mode and apparently crashed. The error message says it does have something to do with the HDD.

This may be a bug introduced by High Sierra. I've seen several similar reports although I haven't experienced it myself.

Apparently it may not be a hardware issue, in spite of the ominous sounding "Root disk errors: "Could not recover SATA HDD after 5 attempts. Terminating." in the panic log.

Some users had positive results changing the sleep mode to hibernatemode 25 per this article.

The good news is it may not be hardware-related though.

Thank you! I'll try it out. I may note that my boot does take longer than usual as well. And while doing so my Mac makes a clicking noise until the start sound comes up. At least it does not sound right to me.

Tried setting hibernation mode to 25. Sorta-kinda-didn't work. It woke up OK after hibernating overnight, showed the login screen, then crashed immediately. I see this in my DiagnosticReports folder:

Google Chrome Helper_2018-08-06-100537_<my mac name>.crash

Wondering if it's Google Chrome Helper ... is it a cause or a symptom?

Julius2192 -- thanks for the tip. Might try that.
