imac freezes on shut down

hey,
i have an imac with 500gb hdd 3.06 ghz and 4gb ram, im running os x 10.6.4 snow leopard. every time i go to shut down the whole computer freezes i cant click anything, all i see is the wallpaper and nothing is running when i click shut down. anyone got any ideas that can help me ? thanks in advance

Does it shutdown or does it hang on the wallpaper? It's completely normal that you can't do anything while shutting down but if it takes a long time or needs force shut down to shut down, then it isn't normal

yes it hangs on the wallpaper and the only way to turn the computer off is to hold down the on switch

Try the usual PRAM and SMC reset and repair permissions and verify the disk with Disk Utility

Did you repair permissions too? Try creating another account and try it with it. Also, boot into Safe mode and try with it.

ok now it only freezes sometimes but does still freeze

Reinstall OS X. Remember to backup your data even though Archive & Install does not erase any of your files

I remember having a similar problem, it was to do with documents in the print queue, make sure your print queue is empty and that there are no outstanding print jobs.
