Hi everyone.

I dusted off my old 2001 G3 and remembered why I mothballed it. It won't turn on at all!

These are my machine specs

I have run the checks from a troubleshooting manual (trickle charge of 5v.... and the DCO voltage...and the board fuse is OK etc)

I have carefully eyeballed the board and everything looks perfect - except for one component near the capacitors which looks like it is bulging slightly - marked on the board as location L805 with very thick blobs of solder holding it on (could be a ferrite inductor?).

I have removed it off the board with a soldering iron and it has the markings:

CHK-004 1
FEC 0129

Does anyone know what it is and where I can buy one please?

Thanks Mark

Do you have any pictures of the board with that component removed? The red circle is cutting off the markings on the circuit board. The lettering on the board should let you know what kind of component it is. Giving a starting point. If board is marked with an L it's an inductor.

Did you try jumpstarting the PSU by itself with a paperclip? Then check the voltages.

Also did you replace the PRAM battery?

Anyways, lack of bulging or leaking means nothing. The capacitors may still be bad. I've done several recaps. None showed signs of leaking. But the recap usually fixed the issue in all but one computer. One computer it didn't work on was because the traces were eaten away underneath. Another the recap was a partial fix as the ADB also had a blown fuse. But the recap got it from nothing to booting.

Thanks - yes..it is L805 (mentioned in my post above) so I guess that makes it an inductor.
I have since seen some YouTube vids where the same component is apparantly the same odd shape - so my assumption it must be bad may not be valid. I intend to solder it back on the board and try something else.

yes - I did replace the battery with a new one.

I will start to look at recapping if it still won't boot. I didn't try pressing the reset button on the board after replacing the battery....so I will try that next.

Cheers
Mark
