hahaha the keyboard is immaculate lol, and yea this is the best looking imac imo well, purple looks good to

another G3 iMac...

But wait... it's in the original packaging. Beautiful, it's stand out.

I had one of those with Tiger and a DVD in it. As others have said it's still capable of the basics.

I got hold of a used 520 from MIT once and a bunch of what looked like Unicode popped up. Being familiar with the file menu layout in System 8 I was able to guess what I was clicking on, and even left it that way for a while.

It's just a different way of displaying text that sometimes looks like encoded messages.
Take a look under the Safari View menu at the bottom for examples.

I might be thinking of something else though. It looked like uuencode or something like it.

what a beauty ...keep it in this condition :)

im going to :) the box is even in my room lol, this brings up some questions though. Will being exposed to sunlight really hurt the "finish" or fade the paint? i dident think so because its not beige

i dont think it will fade ....but away from the heater
as the imac g3 is convection cooled so it would harm it if you place it direct in front of a heater as there would not be enough cool air to flow in , same actually is for sunlight , it might not fade, but the cooling system could be disturbed as the air is warmer in sunlight , so it could make a difference in the temperature of the imac

ok, so my dad cut the box up and threw it out :eek::eek::eek:

i have the @#*((&#@$ box luck this is almost as bad as when grandpa left my 512k box out in the rain!!!!!!!!

i was so pissed but i couldent yell at him lol

Haha, thats happened to me before. My parents cut up my MacBook box when we were moving (i didnt notice until i couldnt find it at the new house)

as for your 512k box, id be pissed.

Tell your dad to please dont throw stuff out without asking, thats what I told my dad and he stopped all that buisness.

oooooh, Blue.....

Are the manuals missing? I guess you can always locate those somewheres...

I'd love to find a Sage one CIB....

A local computer recycler had one unit only - sort of trashed though... :(

Pardon my BUMP!

I hope you will fogrive a newcomer bumping an old thread, but I'm wondering if I could ask the advice of some of you experienced Mac collectors? While I did not come upon a Mac-in-a-Box, like the original poster, I do have my original Grape iMac G3- 333MHz, 256MB, 6GB HD, tray-driven CD- that is in pretty much in the same excellent condition as the computer in this discussion. It has all its original components- Grape keyboard and Grape puck mouse- as well as both boxes, both styrofoam inserts, plastic baggie covers, paperwork (the iMac did not have traditional manuals), disks, and decals. I have also included a purple-colored lid that HP put out the first year the iMac was released, one that fits most of their printers from this period. There is also a boxed set of minor components- the same Grape color, of course- that includes an AC/USB-powered hub, as well as a Mac-compatible mouse, for those with hands too big to comfortably use the puck. There are also several additional useful disk programs, and a copy of Williams' The Little iMac Book.

This is one of the earliest iMacs, and as such, I've kept it, not so much for future daily use, but collecting. I do have it loaded for use, though, with both OS 9.2.2 and OS X 10.3.9, which functions just fine if you do not overly clutter the desktop with extensive multiple file use. (There is also a copy of AppleWorks 6 and "MSN Office for Mac" installed.) I have maintained its condition all these years as I knew it would be a great collectible, with excellent auction potential someday.

My daily machine is the 17" first-generation iMac G5- 1.6GHz, 1.25MB, and 80GB HD (#1989). Like so many other first-gen G5 owners, this beloved machine blew its logic board on Christmas Eve (thanks, Universe). This couldn't have happened at a worse time, as I am profoundly medically disabled, and have recently been rendered completely homebound. I am looking for ways to either get a refurbished LB, or to have mine repaired, or trade for something worth having. My first question is, do you think the iMac, as described above, would be of enough value to warrant a direct trade for the logic board I need? If not a great trade, would the iMac be of more value than the LB or less?

I have found a dealer who specializes in Mac repairs who is willing to trade, but only if the deal is right for us both. She has suggested I might want to consider trading both the iMac G3 and G5 with its blown LB, for a newer iMac G5 Intel. She has a used 24" G5 dual-core- 2.4GHz, 80GB HD- but only 512MB of memory. She said she would consider trading it for both of my systems, plus an additional $400 added in. Does this sound reasonable to any of you, or should I consider waiting for a different deal, or maybe just get the logic board repaired and stay with my first-gen?

Any logical thoughts on any of this would be extremely welcome, as my head is literally spinning right now with all the potentials.

First, I'm sorry about your disability.
About your computer, I think it depends on what you need at the moment. The G5 will become obsolete sooner than a Intel one, and it may not be worth it to fix the current one. If you are able to or get ahold of someone who can, a used LB could run around $150-250, and it could be installed.

While your iMac G3 is in impressive condition, it's value is very difficult to determine. A typical iMac is worth $25 in a used, lone state. Yours, however, is a well-preserved, and complete example. That's the thing: there are not many examples like it to get a value idea from. To a dedicated collector, it may very well be enough to get a LB replacement, because of the opportunity to own such a example. It may be worth a lot, but you may wait a bit to find the right buyer.

The typical price for the 24" seems to be about $900, with upgraded RAM. By the way, I need to point out that there was not a G5 Intel. The two sometimes look similar, but getting the terms mixed can result in confusion, which I want to prevent. The 17" is a G5, the 24" is Intel. The typical price for a working 17" G5 is around $300, broken ones much less. This would place the value of the G3 at around $200, plus the $400. It might end up being a pretty fair trade, but then again, it depends on whether letting the G3 go is worth it, as it may carry a lot of value, and may go up with time.
Please ask if you need further help, and good luck!

To the person with the Grape G3 Complete-In-Box, I'd sell it in auction - you'd get A LOT MORE than in a trade...

Plus, if it goes to a non-collector, a lot of the important stuff like the box/packaging may and up in the garbage...

keep the iMac g3 this little bugger belongs to you now , they are like pets
a iMac g3 is for life not just for christmas ,
i have two and i use them both daily , they cute little computers these iMac g3's and still usable , but unlike little dogs for example you dont have to go for walkies with them and they dont bark

ok you could trade in your g5 imac for the intel one , but i would get it repaired , cheaper and the g5 iMacs might become obsolete ..in 5 years or so
but for the moment they are still fully usable computers and far from obsolete, so get it repaired (i guess its the capacitors blown on the Lb which should not be to expensive as the caps cost i think if i remember right the whole set about $20 max, plus labour for soldering )
that would give you time to safe up money for maybe a brandnew one in a couple years

I'm pondering on something for my iMac G3 and PowerMac

I have a PowerMac G4 (733Mhz, 1.25Gbs of RAM, 80GB) which I was thinking of selling, but with all those upgrades I say nay nay.

So here's the question, do I keep the PowerMac as it is and not sell it, or do I put the 80Gb HDD into my iMac G3 (500Mhz) and max out the ram to 1Gb then sell the PowerMac with other parts?

I would keep the power mac and not upgrade the imac. That way you will be able to keep and look at both forever! haha

sell the powermac like it is and upgrade the iMac

like i said a imac g3 is for life
i have already bought tons of spare parts for my two ,so i am prepared for every possibility that could go wrong in the next 30 years with them , in basic terms i have 2 x600mhz in bits and 2x700mhz in bits ..prices are low at the moment , so its the best time to buy spare parts , because i have the feeling the prices will go up again
