I have a trusty iMac G4 with the 20" display, which developed a pink hue that is as far as I understand quite common among these machines.

I'd like to replace the LCD, has anyone done this before? Is it possible to have a new IPS panel with the same connector? If not, then would an LCD panel from an iMac G5 be compatible?

Hi haramia, Yes this is possible. I upload you the servie manual. On page 96 there is the description how to open the panel. You have to push the the screen upwards to unrelease fixation in the back. Only then you can take it out. If not you risk to break the plastic where is is connected to the aluminium frame. I opened the display, but did noch change it from a iMac G5. But I read that this is the same screen just a little better.

Thank you! I had to open one in the past, it was quite difficult, because the display frame came broken. The seller hadn't packed up the computer properly before shipping, and half of the bezel broke off its clips. Fortunately I managed to get it off and use epoxy to glue it together.

One thing to look out for when taking out the LCD is that the flex cable of the standby light is very easy to rip. I damaged it but was able to solder it back together. The whole thing ended up being a messy job, but it looked perfect at the end.

I appreciate you confirming the G5 LCD should be compatible. Do you know if there are other display panels that could work? I'm not comfortable with taking apart a working G5 just for its display panel.
