I've never BOUGHT an iMac G4, although I have a few 17" 1.25s.

I like the design, but at the same time they've never made me really want to go out of my way to add more.

With all of that said, I'd like a first gen as it would be a nice OS 9 machine(also, running Leopard on one would be easy). I think I have one in pieces, but I'm not sure if it's complete or not.

And that is a sad, crying shame of a waste...
Even loading a web page on these devices is a painstaking experience. I used to have a 2006 iMac up until recently and I did not enjoy using it for anything other than playing music or some old games.

Side note since the Cube and Trash Can were mentioned...

I want a trash can, but can't really justify it(especially since my 5,1 is better in every measurable way save for the GPU, and even that could be fixed if I could give up SL). I predicted a price dive when the 7,1 dropped, but I think the high base price combined with the fact that you can easily double it running it up to a reasonable configuration hasn't lead to the kind of mass dumping of 6,1s that some of us had hoped. Of course, I will add that I haven't really checked 5,1 prices-it wouldn't surprise me if those are falling since the 7,1 is a logical replacement for many 5,1 hold-outs, while I can see many 6,1 users continuing to be happy with it.

I MIGHT bite on a 6,1 when they go below $500, but given that you're pretty well stuck with the GPU they come with I'm holding out for a good one at that price. Current trends show we're probably a few years away on that.

If you have realistic expectations about what you can do and use an optimized browser, it doesn't have to be.

With TFF or Leopard Webkit, a lot of pages are not terrible to load. Java intense or flash sites are out. I don't know that I'd want to try Facebook. There are ways to do Youtube, but I honestly haven't kept up with what works these days(it seems like everytime someone figures one out, Youtube breaks another API and they quit working). The latter is a real shame-back when programs like Mactubes still worked, Youtube was perfectly watchable on on something like a dual 1ghz Quicksilver. Even the last time I tried it, the Quad had enough horsepower to do it without too much complaining.

I think I used iMac G4s in school years ago. Maybe I would buy one if I saw one for cheap, but it’s not on my “must-have” list.

With the latest version of TenFourFox and PowerUOC, I would think they are at least more or less usable. Of course, it also usually takes a type of individual with a certain amount of patience and drive to really see these machines in their full potential. They usually have certain priorities which propel them to continue their use of said machines, even if they don't offer the expected method of modern browsing. And with continued usage comes trained and increasing patience, sustaining the cycle.

It's a funny thing when the general user needed great amounts of patience when browsing the 90's and early 2000's Web over dial-up, then slowly lost their patience with shrinking page loading times at the onset of new and increasingly advanced technologies... and then either they or their decedents (themselves only knowing a life with fast browsing) had to relearn it whenever rediscovering aged technology in the modern era...

It ultimately boils down to matter of perspective and experience, I suppose.

These things can be used for much more than just web based tasks. There are some software/hardware advantages to these older machines. The iMac G4 would be a small convenience for me, because of the way the display moves around. The place I planned on putting it could benefit from have 180/180 rotation, but it's not worth the price of these things.

For music production, there is still some value in PowerPC Macs, IMO.

Opera 36.0 is the most recent browser that could support Youtube on my old iMac. No tweak or API needed.

Of course it depends on your use case. I'm just talking from my own experience. If you like the design of the G4 so much - which I also love - you can even throw a custom motherboard with contemporary specs inside.

Well--I am not in the UK, but here in the US I have had tremendous success with Craigslist and with sellers such as Goodwill. I have never paid more than US$90 for any of the PPC machines in my collection.

2 MDD Dual 1.25 Ghz G4s
1 Quicksilver 2002 Dual 1.0 Ghz
1 G4 450 Mhz DP Gigabit
1 G4 Cube (uped to a 1.25 Ghz)
1 G3 iMac (Ruby)
1 G4 eMac 1.42
1 G4 Mac Mini 1.42

Four Intel Macs, but you really dont want to know those in a PPC forum!

PowerPC Macs forum can have little an early Intel, as a treat.

That's really a different discussion, though, because early Intel is in a different place(and honestly not as good of one in terms of browser support) than PPC.

With that said, as others have said the web is not the end all and be all of using a computer...

IMO PowerPCs primary use case should be for tasks which are non-web based. Sadly the web has become unreasonably processor dependent making browsing the web with a PPC an exercise in patience. I know tweaking can be performed but with the low prices on much more capable, at least for the web, Intel systems it's hard to justify using PPCs for the web.

I wonder if that was just a typo when he tried to enter the price. That's absurd.

Will they sell one for me?

I have been told that sometimes sellers go on vacation and they jack the prices of the items they are selling up to ridiculous so that they don't sell while they are gone. When they come back the prices revert to a more normal price.

But this is beyond extreme.

I wonder what the rational is behind that given Ebay allows a seller to set a message informing potential buyers they're not available until a certain date. Sort of an out of office for Ebay sellers.

No idea. Although my information probably predates that message.

That's pretty much how I feel about them. I can appreciate the engineering that went into the arm because that is as slick and even aesthetically as pleasing as an Anglepoise lamp.

I'm glad I bought both my 17" iLamps a couple of years ago when people were throwing them out in the UK. I paid £10 each for both. One even came with a mouse and keyboard. Then people discovered the value in "vintage Apple".

If you want an OS9 machine, the 17" 1.0GHz will boot OS9 natively with the relevant MacOS9lives disc.

Some just use it as a placeholder until they sort out their stock. It allows them to recycle a listing, when the stock drops to zero rather than having to relist.

I have 3 iMac g4, one for free that was being thrown out, one as a present from my boss that was used to create a local newspaper back in the day (aparently there used to be a room full of imac g4’s - that would have been a dream to me!) and a 17 inch 1ghz I've owned from new. I stopped using it around 2006 when it started to really slow down with ilife and other task and i discovered powerbooks. The iMac G4 is still hands down the best music juke box coputer when running itunes the music quality is superb! The 1ghz does not natively run os9 it runs it using virtulisation software built in “classic mode” similar to how snow leopard windows macs virtulise power pc apps. Only the earlier models could natively boot into Os 9. Im holding onto them for future value, i think someday all the jobs/ive early design macs will be valuable.

I recently bought a G4 1.25Ghz 17" for US $10. The unfortunate part is it spent a decade in a storage unit, and has some black marks on it that I cannot seem to get out by rubbing with 91% Aclohol (will try a magic eraser soon). The hard drive failed, and the neck is way off kilter and cannot suspend the monitor at any angle other than straight up or all the way down.

So I replaced the hard drive with a 500GB SATA from Crucial and a SATA-PATA adapter. Then the Optical drive failed, so for now a FW400 LaCie Dual Layer DVD external is in use.

Web access? I don't use it (that is what my 5,1 is for) on this machine, but it does make a nice iTunes device when I use it.
