Hi all,

Here is a tricky one... I have an old iMac G5 which I am hoping to connect to my new Apple thunderbolt display (I need to use indesign Cs2!).. the mac still works fine but I have no idea what this connection is and where/if I can still buy one and if I can buy an adaptor to connect to my new thunderbolt display... could anyone help?
Thanks in advance c

That's a mini VGA port on your iMac G5. Using it with a Thunderbolt display is pretty much out of the question, as a Thunderbolt display requires Thunderbolt, only shipped on Macs from 2011 onward.

[doublepost=1505828913][/doublepost]Ah! I thought there may be a third part (or even a mac) adaptor

Connection to the thunderbolt display is impossible with the g5 iMac.

Also be aware that with at least some of the iMac g5's, the external VGA port supports "mirroring" (of the internal display) ONLY.

You DON'T get "an extended desktop" by adding a second display.

From everymac.com:
==================
"Apple reports that this system has a "VGA output port for video mirroring on an external display or projector" and supports "S-video and composite video output to connect directly to a TV or projector" as well."

"However, the hardware is capable of using an external display in dual or "extended desktop mode", Apple just blocked the capability in firmware to protect sales of more expensive Macs. Unsupported third-party hacks are available."

You can get extended desktop on any of those Macs just by installing a third party patch.

I used to do desktop spanning on my iBook all the time back in the day. I don't know if this supports Leopard 10.5 or not though, as the updates seem to end in the Tiger 10.4 era.

Hi Tadpolepatrol, Your iMac G5 will turn iMac 2024.

When your iMac G5 became an iMac 2024, you have iMac 2024 and no longer have iMac G5.
You can enjoy Thunderbolt (Between Thunderbolt 3-Thunderbolt 5) on your iMac 2024.
You can use your thunderbolt display on your iMac 2024.

iMac 2024 will be released in the next 5 years.
