The iMac is now alive and well. It required an amputation, though.
Taking the AirPort/Bluetooth card out was the only way that I could get it to start up properly. I tried to just re-seat it and make sure the antenna wires were hooked up securely, but it still panicked after that.
Now I'm wondering where to get a replacement. Does Apple supply these? It does not seem to be available in the Do-it-yourself parts section of their web site.
