imac g5 won't burn CDs

A friend of mine says his iMac will play CDs, but when he tries to burn a CD from a playlists, it just spits out the blank CD and a message pops up that says he needs to use a blank CD. They're definitely blank, and he's tried a few different brands. Any ideas?

What model is the imac?
Did he ever get a single burn out of his imac...

I'm not sure, other than that it's a G5. I believe he got 1 burn out of it.
