Can someone confirm if an Imac G5 will display on a second screen from startup or does the OSX have to complete the boot process before the second display will work.

The concensus seems to be that the g5 doesn't support spanning, the mini dvi link will only support mirroring (ie, 2nd display only shows what's on the first one).
There is a hack developed for ibooks that is supposed to work, but ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.

It does work. It's called Screen Spanning Doctor, and it actually gives you an option to make your iBook G4 work in Clamshell Mode!
