When I place a DVD (Brand new and blank) into my DVD drive, instead of accepting it, it simply keeps making whirring noises every 10 seconds and then eventually ejects the DVD.

Is there a setting I can change or could the drive have packed up?

I would recommend using a different brand of DVDs or the -R variety if you're using +R or RW. If no DVD discs can be read by your system its probably time to bring the system into an Apple Retail store or an Apple-authorized Service Provider.

What you say tends to make me think you have incompatible dvd disks, or that the optical drive needs updating. What's your model of iMac, and what brand/model of optical drive? I had to change a Pioneer 105 to a 112D in order to accommodate modern disk media. That advice about +R vs -R is good too. As a general rule, use -R.

    Thanks for the reply.

As it happens, after a few attempts, it eventually accepted the Brand New Blank DVD and started burning it.

I have an iMac which I bought about 7 months ago.

I have both +RW and -RW and its the same thing for both.
