Since I got an imac a few weeks ago I am suffering from a really bad pain in the neck.

Previously my pc monitor was on a stand the imac is on the desk so i suspect the reason is the position of the imac

Any tips on good ergonomics and how the imac should be positioned?

Unfortunately you can't really adjust the iMac much. Make sure you not having to look up to see the top of the screen though, I know that can be really uncomfortable for myself and others seem to be the same.

How tall is the stand? Could be the stand height plus the height the iMac display is at. Try just removing the monitor stand and have the iMac on the desk by itself since the chin of the iMac sort of raises the viewing of it a bit

It is on the desk, I think thats what is causing the problem I measured the distance from the floor to the top of the screen and the Imac was about a foot lower.

I've added a stand to raise it up... (ok it's standing on a speaker at the moment) which has raised it about 7 inches so i'll see how that goes also dropped my seat a bit.

As has already been said, you are positioned wrongly relative to your iMac. Have you read page 69 of the User Manual that came with your machine?

If you bought a new or reconditioned machine, you would have received one. Failing that, you can download one from the Apple website.

I bought the VESA adapter and an Ergotron desktop stand for my 24" iMac so I could lower it more than the stock stand would allow.
