Questions:How to create shortcuts on desktop.
How to change shortcut names?
Where is the settings icon?

I thought it would be like my iPad .

What do you mean exactly? Aliases are simply created, and if you have a Finder window open, pressing CMD+L to create the alias and dragging it to the Desktop can be fast. Mac OS X is not made for touch interaction like iOS is, thus the differences.

If you want help, you just need to be specific about what, as your quoted response to my first post is a bit ambiguous, as you could also refer to the System Preferences part.

Have a look at that last link by Mister GGJstudios, I already linked you to it some months ago.
Give it a week or two to get accustomed to Mac OS X and from there on out you learn something new almost every day and hopefully be satisfied by it.

He means the new launch pane in Lion maybe? I haven't upgraded yet.

Launchpad? Though it acts not like a Desktop. But if that is the desired function, I highly recommend looking at the basic tutorials Apple offers and the post by Mister GGJstudios I linked to links to, as I also don't use Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

This iMac has lion. I just want to make it easer for me and my wife by adding an icon to the desktop to quickly access a web page.
.Wife uses Facebook all the time.

Holy crap! All that just to put a shortcut icon on the desktop.
Can I put the sites I go to often into Bookmarks. If so how.

Just click the small website icon to the left side of the URL address bar in Safari and most other browsers, drag and drop it to the desktop. Done. You can safely rename or delete that shortcut.

There is a sweet feature in Google Chrome that creates an application shortcut on the desktop, for any website. For web apps and documents like a spreadsheet on google docs, it makes sense.

It remembers the winow position you last used, and it also uses the favicon or something better for the shortcut icon!

It's in Tools > Create Application shortcut...

Unfortunately it's not implemented in the Mac version. :(

Also try Fluid.

http://fluidapp.com/

Seems fairly easy to use, and it will use the website icon.

OK This is where I am now. I up loaded what I need from my PC onto a flash thingee and it all went into Finder. The first mistake I made was to install all om my pictures into IPhoto. It has been installing them since 3:00 this afternoon. I hope this is normal. BTW: Will the pictures still install in sleep mode?

How many photos are there?

100 photos shouldn't take long at all, perhaps minutes at the longest. If by "over 100" you mean a million, then sure, that could take a really long time. Nothing that I am aware of installs in sleep mode.

My troll-sense is tingling here. You found and managed to subscribe to Macrumors yet can't make a shortcut or bookmark?.....

In the event you are not trolling us, refer to the guides mentioned in earlier posts and good luck with your new purchase :) Try not to get frustrated as all new things take a bit of effort to learn, but will be rewarding in the end.

Wow: That was kind of a bitter sweet remark. BTW: I am guessing it has been a long time since you first went from Windows to Mac. This is a new learning experience for a 73 yr. old just trying to make life easer.

I guess my trolldar was off then. :) Still in the process if making the switch (currently use both) but admittedly computers are my job so I do have an advantage over you there.

I apologise for the troll accusation.

No Problem.
