Most indications and rumours suggest the forthcoming MacBook Air (assuming it’s still called that) with be powered by the M2 chip.

Presently the iMac 24in., MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini and iPad Pro are all powered by the M1. The approach, or message, appears to be that you get similar performance in all of them so it just comes down to which form factor you prefer.

And now that the iPad Air has been given the M1 it joins the group, but at less cost. If the aforementioned devices are all supposed to be on par performance wise, and the forthcoming redesigned MacBook Air is an M2, then it stands to reason the other devices (minus the iPad Air) should also get the M2.

So when might we expect an iMac with the M2?

Rumor has it possibly fall 2022 or not even sometime in 2023. Fall 2022 would make sense being that the MacBook Air and Mac Mini will be 2 years old in the fall and they also use the m1. Pushing out consumer focused m2 machines (including iMac) right before Christmas would be smart. I would not hold out hope for an m2 pro in an iMac.

Given the 24in. iMac is presently the only iMac available (until further notice) it would be nice if an M1 or M2 Pro were maybe a top spec option, but I won’t hold my breath. Having 32GB RAM would also be a welcome option.

An updated M2 iMac would now be able to access 24gb of RAM.

Not sure the timing or priority for Apple to make this bump.

How the M chips perform with games is irrelevant if the games in question weren’t developed for the chips in the first place. It’s a bogus argument until you run games developed for the M chips.
