IMAC MODEL:
27-inch, Late 2013 (https://support.apple.com/kb/sp688?locale=en_US)

SUMMARY:
Internal Hard Drive (Seagate BarracudaTM 1000GB / Model: ST1000DM003) died, so I replaced it with the Samsung 870 EVO SSD.

I start up the computer in Recovery Mode, open Disk Utility, and erase the new hard drive/change it to Extended (Journaled), etc. I close Disk Utility.

I click reinstall macOS and the only option is OS X Mountain Lion (10.8). I put in the network, choose English, and specify that I want the macOS on SSD. It loads 100% on the SSD and then automatically restarts my computer.

PROBLEM:
Once it restarts, Apple logo shows/disappears and prohibitory symbol (circle with a line in it) appears with a loading circle underneath it. Do I wait or?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Also, I remember that before I got a new hard drive... if I ever factory reset my computer then it would let me install 10.9 Mavericks or 10.13 High Sierra right away/from the jump? I don't remember having Mountain Lion or it's been too long that I forgot.

I'm trying to get everything to work and want to have High Sierra on it.

IIRC there is a HDD thermal sensor built into the original iMac HDD. You will need to substitute it with a 3rd party thermal sensor when using a 3rd party SSD/HDD.

That causes an error for boot up? I saw a few videos on YouTube and no thermal sensor was added, so I figured that was optional and I didn't need one. Some say you don't need it either.

Either use the Adapter with the Thermal Sensor or:

One has developed a solution that eliminates the 4SNS/1/40000000:TH00-9.000 problem after replacing a HDD in the following Apple models that do not have an external drive temperature sensor:
- iMac 21.5-inch A1311 (2011 model)
- iMac 27-inch A1312 (2011 model)
- iMac 21.5-inch Retina A1418 (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 models)
- iMac 27-inch Retina A1419 (models: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015)

His method requires no investment in adapters, additional cables or modules, does not interfere with the computer's wiring, is fast and 100% effective. It cancels all the symptoms described below, including the error display in the AHT.

Symptoms:

- very slow operating system,
- kernel task 100% and more in the Activity Monitor (constant, full CPU load),
- high fan speed (hard disk fan on A1311/A1312 models, main fan on A1418/A1419 models),
- 4SNS/1/40000000 error: TH00-9,000 in the AHT (Apple Hardware Test - triggered by holding the Alt+D keys during the boot process).

Cause:

New hard drives that do not have the Apple logo are not compatible with the SATA standard introduced by Apple, which provides for a temperature sensor on the drive's electronics board. Apple drives use pin 11 of the SATA power connector (15-pin) to transfer power from the temperature sensor. The following explains the difference between the standard SATA connector and Apple's SATA connector:

Figures 1 and 2 - Pinout of the SATA power connector (left standard pinout, right Apple pinout).

Solution:

Simply connect pin 11 to pin 12 of the SATA power connector with a drop of tin before installing the drive, as shown in the figures below:

Connecting pins 11 and 12 of the SATA connector (on the left a 2.5" drive where the solder joints of the connector are accessible without removing the electronics, on the right a 3.5" drive where the solder joints are inaccessible from the outside and the removal of the electronics board is required)

When you went to install the new OS did you:

Boot to "Recovery" mode (Command-R)
or
Did you boot to "INTERNET Recovery mode" (Command-OPTION-R)

?????

You want "INTERNET recovery"... and NOT [ordinary] "Recovery".

Try this:
(yes, I realize it means erasing the drive and "starting over")

1. Power down.

2. Boot to INTERNET recovery:
Command-OPTION-R

3. If you're connecting via wifi, you'll need your wifi password.

4. The internet utilities take a while to load, be patient as the globe spins.

5. When the utilities are loaded, open disk utility.

6. VERY IMPORTANT STEP: go to the "view" menu and choose "show all devices".

7. Now look at "the list on the left". The topmost item should represent the PHYSICAL DRIVE inside. Click on it and then click "erase"

8. Erase to "APFS, GUID partition format"

9. Quit disk utility and open the OS installer.

10. I believe the installer will offer you OS 10.15 Big Sur. Start clicking through.

11. The Mac will reboot one or more times, and the screen may go dark for a minute or more with no other indication of activity. Be patient.

12. When done, you should see the initial setup screen (choose your language). Start clicking through.

13. You will be offered the opportunity to restore from a backup drive, or to create a new account. THIS IS YOUR DECISION.

Good luck.
