It sounds like it's in pain...

It's like nails down a chalk board except it sounds more like two bits of metal scraping past each other, maybe a bit like a chav keying your car.

Either way it's not good, everything slows down/freezes during the freak out so i'm guessing its harddrive related (always a kick in the teeth).

Anyone experienced similar problems? Mine is the 3.06 Alu for reference, and I couldn't find much on google (or your favourite internet search engine equivalent).

I would call Apple Care, take it to an Apple Store, or Apple Repair Center. It sounds like a major problem, and it is likely covered by your AppleCare Warranty.

I just noticed this type of noise but it only happens when I use Photoshop. Sounds like a fan issue for me but when I check iStat, it shows only 1200 rpm for fans.

Not sure, I might call apple care.

I get this a lot on my 24" iMac as well. Usually turning the volume up one notch will make it go away, but its highly annoying.

Did you get in touch with apple about yours?

I have the same thing. I don't know what it is but it sometimes sounds like the blade of a fast moving fan which is touching something. Oddly enough, mine only seems to do it after it has been sleeping - so if it goes from being on to showing the screen-saver and then on to a blank screen (ie I have not been using it for 30 minutes or so) then I get the noise. I don't really have a solution except to switch it off if I'm not going to be using it. I don't think I ever hear the sound unless it gets into that semi-powered-down state. I meant to add that mine is also a 3.06 Alu Imac.

iMac high pitched noise

I am getting that high pitched noise as well. Its really driving me crazy. I am taking it in anyway since it has some dead pixels so hopefully it can be fixed then.
