iMac Memory Upgrade - Not Working???

I have a 17" iMac Core Duo and trying to upgrade the memory. Everything I've read says that it will take 3gb memory, but when I insert a 2gb stick and a 1gb stick it won't boot. It boots fine with either stick, but not together. Here's the specs on the unit. Any suggestions?

It maxes out at 2 since it is a core duo and not core 2 duo.

Return the 2GB and get another 1GB in that case (as stated in the post above).
