I am relatively new to the forum and thinking of making the switch from a PC. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what company makes the LCD panel for the iMac monitor and what model number it is? I am pretty sure it is a S-IPS type panel because of the viewing angles, but have been trying to track down the actual model number.

Also, does the iMac monitor run on a digital signal?

The iMac has an LG panel, the same panel as the dell 2005FPW (if that helps).

I can't give you the exact details but if you do a searh on this forum for "dismantled intel imac" the you should find the thread with it taken apart with lots of pics - that might tell you.

Good luck with the switch - I love my iMac, the screen is just fantastic.

seeing as how it offers dvi output, i can only imagine that the feed from the gpu to the display has to be digital as well.

It would be digitally connected to the LCD even if the iMac only had a VGA port on it.

Thanks B.B. I did a search under 'dismantled intel imac' and did not find anything pertaining to the actual model number. But I do remember that thread when the new iMacs first came out. Someone had posted photos of a dismantled machine and there were comments about how messy the guts of the new intels looked compared with the earlier G5s.

The LG panel sounds right. If it's true that it's the same as the Dell 2005FPW then the model number is: LG Philips LM201W01. Which is a S-IPS type panel.

I know with most PC lcd monitors, they have the option of both VGA and digital inputs, with digital almost always being better. It would stand to reason the iMac would be running on a digital signal. Just wanted to be sure :)

Are the usual display adjustments for normal LCD monitors found on the iMac monitor as well? Is there anything that can't be adjusted? Can the sharpness of the text be adjusted? (i.e. something akin to 'clear type'?)

Mac OSX has font smoothing built-in.

On the iMac, the level is auto-adjusted (though you can change it).
