How cool would it be to have an iMac Neo?

Think of it:

20” display, fun colors, a little slower specs, $599.

The education market would be set ablaze. Entire corporations, governments, universities, maybe even towns would have no choice but go the iMac route as that would be such a stellar value.

Entry level: iMac Neo
Mid tier: iMac
Pro tier: iMac Pro
Portable tier: iMac fold

Thoughts?

I think you are more likely to see a iMac Pro again than a cheaper iMac model. The only instances I can see something like that even being useful is in school settings and in general schools are basically in the 13' laptop business and thats it. If they need more specific computers for specific courses or classes they'll buy that stuff too but schools probably would rather deal with laptops in volume than desktops in volume anyways.

I think the current iMac is quite a bargain for what it is, especially with the educational discount. Putting in a cheaper panel & an A series chip for example would be a bad idea and cheapen the product.

I'd go the other way and would like to see a proper iMac Pro with an M5/M5 Pro chip for example in 27/32" sizes.

The Mac Mini is the cheap option for those wanting a desktop.

Umm, I think you're a Population of 1 clamoring for a smaller and less powerful iMac. Good luck with that...
🙂

To make a more affordable iMac Apple would need to downsize the screen. This was more reasonable when they had 21" and 27" iMacs, but with a 24" normal iMac I don't think home/business users would take to a 2026 desktop that has a smaller screen than the current iMac.

I remember those 21" iMacs. I also remember once upon a time the 17" and 20" iMac G5s... 20" was considered huge!

Personally I could see a budget iMac getting as small as 20" and still being a hit.

Not very competitive against the combination of Macbook Neo + external display.

I don’t. Times change and most people aren’t clamoring for smaller screens on desktops. Mobile Macs account for over three quarters of sales and for part of a niche like an all-in-one Apple decided years ago to standardize on one size instead of two, and give value other manufacturers didn’t with Retina displays. You go lower in screen size and Apple’s uniqueness in iMacs becomes less unique.

Just because you think a smaller iMac (or a foldable iMac, as you posited in another thread) would be a huge seller doesn’t mean it would. It not only ignores Apple’s design choices, the limitations of the market, and the extant rumors, it ignores what people are actually buying when it comes to desktops. It just isn’t going to happen, any more than a foldable iMac

I think the education market now prefers laptops that can either be carried around by students or moved between classrooms on trolleys. Having to "book the computer lab" and re-arrange classrooms would be a step backwards.

...and I think that goes for most entry-level customers nowadays, with the majority of Mac sales being laptops. That gives Apple an opportnity for a bit more product overlap between laptop products. An iMac Neo would have a far smaller market than the MB Neo, wouldn't enjoy the same economies of scale and would pose more danger of cannibalising iMac and Mini sales.

The AIO market is dying, and since apple has the most popular AIO, its not immune
Schools, home users, and businesses have all moved on to the laptop form factor
