I used to own iWow in a previous life and it was pretty good. Now there is Hear.

Is there something that:

1. Will make my iMac (new model) louder
2. Make my iMac 27" sound better

The app Hear from JoeSoft.com seems to fill the bill. They have a 30-day demo download available on the site. The software is $20; it's also part of the current $50 mupromo.com bundle.
