imac not seeing my external drive....

I just accidentally unplugged my freecom 160gb hard drive without binning it first. I got the 'item not ejected properly' warning, and now my mac can't see it. I've switched everything off & back on again but it still isn't appearing on my desktop.

Am I screwed or can anyone help?

Have you tried an SMC reset yet? It sometimes helped me correcting erratic behaviour with an external HDD.

So it's just a matter of shutting the computer down then unplugging the power lead?

That doesn't seem much different to the shutdown I've already tried.....
