I just ordered a 20" iMac

Yep, about five minutes ago. The anticipation just became too much. I need a computer now so I'm buying now. They say good things come to those who wait. No, good things come to those who get off their @$$ and go after what they want.

First time Mac buyer, btw. I'm so stoked!!

I think it silly to buy an Apple Computer right now.

Soon you will be shelling out for iLife 07 and/or Leopard.

He's a 1st time Mac buyer. Congrats by the way. He doesn't probably need to get the newest OS and iLife when they most likely will have some bugs through 10.5.1 or 10.5.2. First time Mac buyers don't necessarily need to wait for Leopard. Especially when there is no annoucement of a ship date. Let him enjoy, get used to it etc. He gets n wireless and 64bit, he can upgrade the OS in 6 months.

Now me, I'm waiting for Leopard. But I've also used, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, and worked for Apple. I think I have rainbow blood. Not to mention I got a Mini in the fall so the wait wouldn't be so bad.

The next wave will have the new software, but I'm in doubt that there will be much of a "redesign". Perhaps a bit of an upgrade to the processor, but otherwise I doubt there will be any "redesign", at least not with how the rumours are going.

I say, if you can wait, then wait. The new OS and software will save you a few hundred from upgrading later, but if you don't care then just go for it. The machines will be far better then your current ones and any small upgrade won't be noticeable.

To give you some perspective, I'm writing this message on a Dell Dimension XPS T500... yeah, that's circa December 1999.

LOL.. Oh man.. we are in the same boat... The only issue I have with the iMac is I hate being married to the monitor.. If I could get the iMac guts into a G5 box and bring my own monitor (22" gateway HD monitor) I'd be a happy camper...

He may not need it, but if it was me, I would sure as hell want it. 10.5.1 will be out within two weeks and the bugs aren't going to be prevent someone from using the computer...its probably around $200 more hes going to spend just right around the corner.

What's the real difference whether I buy now or if I had bought 3 months ago.

1. We still don't know when Leopard is coming. It is more than likely 2 months away.

2. If I had bought 3 months ago, Leopard would come out and I'd have to buy it. If I buy now, Leopard will come out and I'll have to buy it... or maybe not. Why can't I use Tiger for a while and watch others trip over bugs for a few months? As a windows user I never switch to a new version until its been out for at least a year, perhaps Macs are different, but that's what I'm used to.

3. If I wait for Leopard and the iMac is still not updated then there will be more rumors of the iMac updates coming "just around the corner". Should I wait for that then too? If I do, then I likely wouldn't be able to buy a computer until July or maybe August. That's another five months of waiting that I'm not willing to spend.

I need a computer now so I'm buying now. If Leopard comes out tomorrow my decision is still correct given the information I had at the time. You can't avoid buyers remorse, you can only ignore it.

If I buy an iMac now and get Tiger with iLife 06, I don't mind paying for Leopard when it come out in June, but why do I have to buy iLife 07 if I already bought a new Mac in 2007?

Anyone that feels early adopters are going to be "tripping over bugs" which will cause them to be unable to use the computer or causing an "unusable expeirence" is IMO just lying to themselves.

There may be some bugs, but nothing major and the first round of bugs will be fixed within two weeks.

My computer came with iLife 05 which was November. As soon as iLife 06, 2 months later, came out with all the new features in iPhoto and new iDVD themes, I couldn't wait and ended up spending the money immediately.

For those that don't use iLife or can skip iLife 07, more power to them.

I also don't have alot of money to burn. If I was buying something and was well aware that within two months there was going to be some significant software/hardware upgrades and the software alone was valued at around $200, I would have the will power to wait. Unless you depend on your computer for your livelihood, people should wait or you can afford to shell out $200 soon after.

People make the argument you can wait forever, but in this case its worth it because of the software involved and we are well aware its about to come.

I sold my old desltop Mac and bought a MacBook 13" to tide me over until the new iMac 20" comes out. My plan was to then sell the book and go to the new iMac. Well this little book works so well, I can't part with it! I will get the new iMac but I will definitely keep the book as well! My first computer was the Apple ll and I've been with Apple ever since!

MY BROTHER !!!!!

I have the exact machine except the purchase date was July 1999. It just won't die. I know I can't wait forever but hope to limp along for another couple of months just to see what Steve brings forth.

Enjoy the new machine.

Thanks!

Mine is trying hard to die. I have video card issues that I haven't been able to resolve. The screen goes black for a second when I open a program or alt-tab to a different window. Refresh issues also exist when scrolling in a window. I've been dual booting into Debian for simple web browsing tasks, Debian doesn't have any of these issues, but I'm nothing close to a Unix master. After many hours of troubleshooting I did a complete format and reinstall of Windblows and the issues still exists. This combined with the fact that I can't watch Diggnation, MacBreak or movie trailers on Apple.com and can't run iTunes or play any games that have come out in the past 3-4 years makes waiting around for an as-of-yet unscheduled update nearly impossible.

The fact is, I really like the current iMacs. It's the computer I want. Leopard or not I simply need a new box.

Help would be appreciated

I have a 2000 ventage Dell that has served me pretty well, but it is about to give up the ghost. Two of my kids have Macs and love them. I have used WordPerfect and Excel for all of my computing life.

Will iWork translate all of my old WordPefrect stuff or will I have to do something funky when I get a mac?

As I understand it, iWork has some sort of spreadsheet program. I don't do a lot of complicated spreadsheet stuff, but do a lot of simple spreadsheets. What is the iWork spreadsheet like?

Thanks.
