hi All, So i am looking for a either a iMac or mac mini, I have done some research on both but cant really decide which route to go. the iMac i want to get will be price at $2k with the following specs 3.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz) with 6MB L3 cache 1 TB (7200-rpm) hard drive, 8 GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory 27-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1440 resolution NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX graphics processor with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory Mac OS X Mountain Lion I then plan to upgrade this to 32GB the Mac mini i want is price at $800 with the follow specs 2.3 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz) with 6MB L3 cache 4 GB (two 2GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory 1 TB (5400-rpm) hard drive Intel HD Graphics 4000 i will also plan to upgrade this to a 256 or 512GB SSD and 16GB. Also a 2TB Time Capsule for all my media files. If i get the Mac Mini I will plan to get a TB Display for it, but not the current one, maybe in the Future if and when it has retina. So considering all this which one would you go with? Thanks for all your input.
I say go with the iMac. More powerful and if in the future you want a retina display you can use it with the iMac.
I mean it depends what your budget and finances look like as well. I got the new iMac and am very happy with it. However the Mac Mini is a great machine and I have had one in the past and was very pleased with it.
is the hard drive upgradable on the iMac? I know they have fusion but I'm not a fan of those. this might be one of the reasons why I would go with the Mac mini.
the hard drive is upgradable on the iMac but it's not exactly user friendly. You'll have to take off the screen and such to get to the HDD
yea i saw the video on youtube for the 2011 imac, doesnt look like the avg Joe should be messing with those kind of installs
The 2011 iMac is an easy install versus the 2012 iMac. If you're not adventurous on DIY computer stuff then I'd recommend leaving your iMac alone.
i see what you are saying. well heres a side note, a buddy of mines who works in an apple store, told me they have some base model $1799 iMac in stock. I asked about the $1999 one and he said he isnt sure when those will come in. is the 2.9 that much different from the 3.2? should i just jump on this base model before they run out again?
so my buddy told me the iMacs were just sold out over the weekend. I was a bit upset about that, then i was browsing Amazon and notice the base 27" was in stock, though only 3 left (now 1) i quickly placed the order and select next day shipping for $3.99 more, so now I will be getting my base iMac tomorrow! so excited
