OP: your point about the 14 day returns period is also valid here. If Apple DO release an updated iMac within the grace period, you can return it and get the new model.

I highly recommend the Pegasus unit for external storage and real-time editing. It comes in R4 (4TB) R8 (8TB) and if you are super wealthy R12 varieties...Thunderbolt connectivity allows for real time edits, and I have mine split into two arrays, one for archival purposes, the other for projects I'm currently working on.

Hope you get the Mac you want..:)

I picked up the base 21" model for my wife yesterday and have a Samsung SSD arriving today. Once that gets here I'm taking the still boxed iMac and SSD to a nearby Apple Authorized Service Provider who will install the SSD plus more memory themselves which will enable me to not break AppleCare or warranty. That way I know the machine will be viable for a long time to come and still be serviceable. Might be something to look into if you're wanting to add SSD at today's cost and for significantly less and still have support in place. Check with your AASP before you take the plunge though.

I purchased my iMac last year when they came out and had been waiting to see what the new refresh was going to bring. I also decided not to wait and ordered an OWC 240 SSD and brought it into a local Authorized Apple service center to install. They only charged me 50 bucks since I was having the 1tb Seagate drive replaced under the HD recall. I will agree it was a lot cheaper to have an apple service center install the drive vs apple upgrade as I too wanted to keep my Applecare warranty.

If i had known how fast these iMacs would feel with a SSD I would have done this a lot sooner. Its a night and day difference, from the apple sound to login is under 10 seconds,. crazy.

To the OP, as others have said, I would guess the new iMac would have USB3, current gen CPUs and the big one might be a higher end GPU. I dont think the USB3 or current gen CPU would be a deal breaker for me but the possibility of a better GPU might. I have a friend who just purchased a new iMac and I had brought up the same question, what if they come out with a new version this month. His replay was, it does everything he needs it to do today so why wait until tomorrow.

It really comes down to if you want to wait and what do you expect the life cycle to be with this PC? If you think you may upgrade in a year or 2 then why wait, if your going to keep it forever then it might be nice to have USB3 and a little better CPU/GPU.
