I spoke with an Apple specialist on the phone today and they informed me the iMac Pro will be available for viewing and purchase on Thursday, December 21 at the physical Apple Store.

12/29 Update: Standard configuration available today at most Apple Stores in US.

I wonder what configurations they will stock. I would almost be tempted to buy the base +64GPU... seeing it in store might be too hard to resist

You could probably look at the Apple Store online to see which configurations are available for in-store pickup, probably late Wednesday or early Thursday morning.

I would hope that they would at least have the 10c/64/2TB/V64version they provided reviewers. My hopes are pretty dim though considering that the local store doesn't even stock a single iMac with an SSD.

I am really more interested in when B&H gets them. My local sales tax is 9.875%. That's a big hit for an $8000+ machine.

Trebuin in the iMac Pro order thread suggested some or all of the 5 recommended configurations that come up on the iMac Pro site web page (not the Apple Store app)...

Recommended Configurations

Maybe not all 5, as that would be too many SKUs to stock, and at the same time in 2014 the Mac Pro only had the 4-core and the 6-core as standard. Guess we'll see Thursday.

On the apple.co.nz website there are two "recommended configurations" listed, the base and the same upgraded with 64Gb RAM and 64 graphics. I'd guess these would be the ones you're likely to see in a store.

Now you mention it, it's the same on the Australian site. In fact, if you plug in different country codes into the URL,

https://www.apple.com/au/shop/buy-mac/imac-pro?product=MQ2Y2X/A&step=config#

it varies between two choices and five. Smaller markets, such as au, nz, and fr get 2 choices, and larger markets such as us (don't need a country code) and uk get 5 choices.

I think you're probably right: those might be the prebuilt configurations likely to be warehoused locally, other configs have to be CTO'd and shipped from Shenzhen.

Weird though they wouldn't make a 10-core standard everywhere. Don't they think we can afford it?

Well, it was later than Apple said, but most Apple stores in the US are now showing in-store pickup available today for the standard configuration. The other recommended configurations show pickup available Jan 11 and selecting any other option extends the date to Jan 18, or Feb 27 for the 14 and 18 core CPUs. (Selecting the VESA mount doesn't change the date on the ordering page, but when you add it to your cart it shows that it'll ship separately in 8-10 business days.)

I can’t imagine that Apple will not at some point make space grey accessories available. I would expect it to be an option across the board much as it has across the other lines.

I assumed you asked at the time if perhaps they had any SG trackpads out the back?

You know, marked "NOT TO BE SOLD TO ANYONE OTHER THAN IMAC PRO CUSTOMERS, CROSS MY HEART AND HOPE TO DIE."

;)

Also, iMac Pro base config is now available in Australian Apple Stores. Kinda surprised to see it in my local (surburban shopping centre) Apple Store, but it is.

Tried an iMac Pro yesterday. The keyboards on the Pro are in fact different than the new keyboards on the standard iMac. The feel is amazing and much closer to the MacBook Pro keyboards but with more travel. Really would like to get this keyboard.

I asked. They didn’t have any.
