1) I recall reading someplace that the iMac Pro has a problem booting from non-Thunderbolt 3 external hard drives. Is that true?

Would it boot from an USB-C interface drive that I intend using as a backup?

2) Has anyone tried calibrating the iMac Pro display using i1 Pro? According to this post, every time you reboot the display does not hold its brightness setting (which, if true, is totally unacceptable for professional photo work). My current i1 hardware is unavailable as we're moving, and do I cannot confirm.

Update: I tried booting from a USB-C external G-Technology drive and the iMac Pro gets stuck at the Apple logo. Nothing happens after that. I have had to force a hard shutdown.

Anybody with this issue? I want to have at least one external backup clone that I could reboot off.

For number 2, I haven't had any problems with the i1 Pro calibrating and it does hold its settings if you SAVE them. Their software is a little outdated and confusing, but once you get the hang of it you shouldn't have no problems.

Thanks, and good to hear. I have used the i1 software for years on my standalone displays.
[doublepost=1530989351][/doublepost]As for my #1 issue, perhaps I have to check into the Settings. I found something here -

Update: The iMac Pro is by default set to not boot with any external drive. You have to change the settings by restarting the iMac Pro in Recovery mode (Cmd-R) on startup, go into Security Utilities (thus far unique to iMac Pro) and allow it to boot off an external.

I tested this with an OWC Envoy Thunderbolt 3 SSD (my backup boot drive) and it works well.

More details here -
