having read the reviews that barefeats did with Vega cards in eGPU boxes the key will be drivers. currently there no good drivers for Vega on High Sierra. One would hope that Apple is merely just sitting on them until the iMac Pro releases, if not it will be a big disappointment

http://barefeats.com/early_vega.html

That article is old. The drivers are fine under 10.13.2. I run a Vega 56 as an egpu. It works great, the only issue is the loud fan.

Nvidia has terrible support, the cards just don't work in Macs (without web drivers - they don't work for sure), with web drivers they are also buggy. AMD cards have much better support since 10.12.6

their drivers, I have an iMac with a 780m have been flawless and let me play games the stock Apple drivers never let me play. so I don't understand where you are coming from. plus I get regular updates from them and the ability to swap between their drivers and Apple on demand.

I’ve run forums and until there are enough threads to make a sub-forum look “full”, it’s actually counter-productive to give it its own place. There’s a certain critical mass that pulls people in. Prior to that critical mass you want the iMac Pro threads to be additive to the iMac threads.

to me it needs to be kept in the mac pro forum as that it is the intended audience / buyers

so that leaves only one very big elephant in the room, the power consumption of these cards

Likely down clocked to stay within the thermal design limit of the case. Can't say I haven't seen it before. The 56 should be full speed, but probably not the 64, unless they pulled some magic on the cooling.

I forget where I read this (I think Anandtech) but iMac Pro's Vega 64 compute scores/capability match the 56 desktop card. So they must be downclocking it.

Not entirely accurate....

As for gaming, I think people need to finally just accept that gaming on apple macs sucks. Here in New Zealand gaming on a mac has for decades been considered a "why bother?" endeavour. If gaming is you prerogative just go with what works for gaming.

Apple has never ever done anything for gamers yet this whole gaming thing continues to come up.

$1800 extra for the base model just cause you’re in Denmark....This is so blatant theft I have no words.
Not entirely accurate, in the states you will pay sales tax on top of the price, in Denmark your outrageous (even by UK standards) 25% sales tax is already included so $1250 of that increase is your government, $550 extra is what you are paying and that hasn’t taken into account import taxes etc.

Gaming in macs is fine, they work just as well as any other intel AMD based computer with same silicon. just load windows10 on bootcamp and away you go a separate gaming pc on same hardware.

It´s actually only $441 or ≈ 8.8% to cover conversion rates and fees.

You can blame Apple for a lot of things, but not socialism.. :)

on par of 1070 /1080??

whoever buy this for gaming is stupid

iMac pro is not for gaming, 5000+ can build a super fast gaming computer, alot better than iMac Pro for gaming

I don’t agree. It’s the most capable Mac for gaming ootb. It’s convenient to only have the single desktop computer that can be used for multiple purposes. Workflow during the day and gaming in the evening. :)

This graphic makes me feel obsolete.
