Imagine what it could have been had it not been for the unnecessary thin iMac chassis.

They really should have made a new bigger chassis for the iMac pro

Exactly. It really is a shame to use powerful Xeon processors only to cripple them by case design.

As a comparison... I hope some tech-vlogger builds a similar machine using the same processor in a traditional desktop PC case with adequate airflow.

Or watercooling is a thing. :)

I wonder if Apple's love of the iMac all-in-one "thinner" and the old cheese grater (thousand holes for venting heat) Pro case concept could go together? For example, instead of a smooth sealed back on this iMac, what if the whole back was cheese grater holes, giving lots of tiny vents for heat to dissipate. Wouldn't that relieve the need to underclock at least some?

Downclocked? Apple admitted to “painting themselves into a thermal corner” with the trashcan (I think was the phrase they used.) I can’t help but wonder if they have done the same again with this iMac Pro.
I’m not the target market for this, but will watch with interest how it goes with regards to fan noise and thermal throttling, as well as real world performance of course. I’d be less sceptical if they just made the thing thicker.

Nice, a $5000+ non-upgradable computer that is down-clocked due to thermal constraints.
I'd much rather go with a maxed out standard 27" 5k iMac.

Care to build one for us?
That's what I do for a living. All that is needed is your requirements. Bet I could knock at least 2k off the cost.

Loooking good.

Really looking forward to the modular Pro and pro display.

To some degree they realised this at the beginning of this year when the development of the new Mac Pro was greenlit.

So another Apple product that is thermally limited due to the prioritization of design aesthetic over function? For that kind of money, it should have it's own special chassis, and possibly a bigger/thicker shell, to allow it to run at full speed.

I really don't understand this decision. Why limit yourself to a design from 2012 and design a new chassis to accommodate the more powerful internals. You know it will have thermal problems no matter how good they say the fans are. They could have tried a little harder in making this design feel a little more "pro". For example, maybe thinner display bezels, thinner chin, iterate on the stand, etc. Use this "iMac Pro" as a look into the future of desktop macs. ugh this company drives me crazy!

The people who spend that kind of money on a machine aren't buying a piece of art. :D

Actually, many are. Many of us - especially folks in visual design fields - really, really like having aesthetically well-designed devices as part of our long workday. I would argue that having a visually pleasing Apple AIO on one's desk as compared to a crap Dell AIO helps one do better design.

Basically the iMac pro is the nMP in an iMac enclosure. All of the complains and problems people had with the nMP will be the same for the iMac pro. I really don't understand this product. It would have made some sense if the New MacPro wasn't coming in 2018! People sill need and want nVidia GPUs, but they will be stuck once again with a non upgradable AMD GPU and other components.

it's insane to me that the iPhone 8 geekbench score is already 1/3 of the score on an iMac PRO.
Yes, it's apples and oranges, but the iPhone 8 runs on basically a AA battery.
And lasts 10 hours doing so.

Imagine a quad A11 chip running macOS.
