I need a 2 TB array as working disks for FCP in Firewire 800 capable of playing back AppleProRes files on Imac quad. Any suggestion?
How would the speed be compared to an internal sata 7200?
    Thanks

Western digital studio ii . I've got the 4tb and love it.

External drive will never be as fast as internal unless you go esata which is not available on iMac.

Of course that is an option. But as far as I can tell the procedure is quite invasive and will void your apple warranty.

It hasn't been determined if it will or will not void the warranty, I asked OWC several weeks ago the question how installing that kit would affect my Apple warranty, the reply was "We don't know." Clearly you are concerned about your warranty, personally I'd rather someone else be the guinea pig on that warranty question so at least there is some precedent.

OP: you will get a MAX of 75MB/s using a fw800 cable, even though the RAID can easily hit +130MB/s.

add the eSata port + external case to get +200MB/s (using RAID0) or get another computer.
