i am now facing this problem. i also bring my imac to an apple althorised rapair center twice. but they said not problem found. but yesterday, this "shutdown occured again when i am trying to burn a dvd, and my imac was very hot ( although it is in a air conditioning room ) due to hot weather. but today is a rainy day, i try to burn a dvd, NO SHUTDOWN this time, so i can say imac shutdowns randomly very possible cause by OVERHEATING !

its nothing to do with overheating..its your SMU powersupply.

Once it starts to shut down, it will get more frequent eventually causing it to not turn on.
because it so rando,, its so annoying to pinpoint and show to the store...

print out your logs in system prefs....and look for the shutdown cause.
i would maybe put a bet it will say 'shutdown cause 122. or 2 or 5'..

ive had this problem with 3 different imac's. The ALS G5 iMac was really bad with it.
Then i had it on my Intel 1st Gen White iMac....and then on my first Aluminium iMac.

Thankfully i got it replaced without questions and i now have a perfect 24"er.

i hope this helps...

Started crashing again

Me again. Bad news. My random shutdowns have started again. Power supply was changed in mid May and I thought all was fixed but it started crashing again a couple of weeks ago and it has just crashed three times in the last 2 hours.

Back to the apple store.

That really stinks--its almost exactly what happened to me except that after 2 repairs, almost everything in my iMac failed. Take it in and demand a replacement. I got one on my 5th attempted repair. (After the screen wouldn't turn on.)

Your's looks very similar to mine. The shutdown cause 0 is what mine is getting about 90% of the time. Luckily, I haven't had a shutdown in over 3 weeks!! The last one was on a wake from sleep.

Re: started crashing again

Well I got my machine back several days after I took it in. This time with another new power supply, sata inverter cable and logic board. Have to wait and see if that fixes it permanently.

However they managed to introduce other faults when it was in for "repair" which I was furious about and am currently complaining about. Suffice it to say I have refused to take it back to the Apple Store again.

Well, we can only hope that this fixes it, but I know what you mean about the "other faults." They made my screen inoperable after the third repair on my first machine. Everything else was completely fine (would boot, accept mouse and keyboard commands, play a DVD, etc), but neither the internal screen nor the external screen worked at all, so I think they may have killed my graphics card in the process. That was the last straw, and when I told them I would go back to getting Dells, they replaced it after looking at it for about 30 minutes.

Well, mine shut down twice today. It had been going strong for so long too. :(

It was copying songs from a few iPods because my external HD with my iTunes on it failed. Not a good day for my computer. Well, this is the log:

Sep 6 12:34:54 localhost DirectoryService[11]: Improper shutdown detected
Sep 6 12:34:56 localhost kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: 0
Sep 6 18:27:19 localhost DirectoryService[11]: Improper shutdown detected
Sep 6 18:27:20 localhost kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: 0

Same shutdown cause 0, so it seems the same as before. BTW, I have been having to do a few SMC resets lately because the machine refuses to start up. Have you had this problem? What problems did the "Geniuses" at the Apple store introduce?

I have been OK since Amsys fixed my machine, as I refused to take it back to the Applestore. The first time the speaker cables weren't connected properly and the second time they cut through the microphone cable with a screw. I wrote to the manager at the Applestore and copied Ron Johnson, an Apple MD in Cupertino :) and told them the whole sorry saga. The Applestore manager apologised and made amends by sending me an Applecare pack. I have Procare too so I am well covered at least.

Sorry yours is still playing up.

Glad yours is OK. I was doing some heavy work that I almost never do yesterday, so it was to be expected. However, I did have a dying external drive that was connected and a shutoff ended its short life very abruptly. Luckily Costco was quick to replace it and even gave me $20 back because it got lower in price. Anyway, if something else comes up I'll let you know. What parts did they repair last time?

I had a similar issue that had the same error in the console:

8/31/15 10:59:40.000 PM kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: 0

but I also got a dialog after restart:

When you start to work on a… - Screen Shot 2015-09-01 at 1.38.01 PM.png

The details revealed that a program called CrashPlan Pro had a bad pointer which caused a kernel panic. Everything in the console since restart was an entry from the crashplan engine every 10 seconds. The crashplan menu item was grayed out, and trying to run the application failed. Reinstalling didn't fix it, so I had to uninstall it.
