So I just bought a brand new 24" iMac and got a free iPod Touch out of it (with rebate of course)

I don't really want to keep the iMac - I just wanted the free iPod Touch. So, I'm giving away/selling my iMac to one of my family members who lives pretty far away. I haven't opened my the iMac or the 3 year apple care.

What I want to know is if I send in the rebate with the UPC label for the iMac, am I automatically registered under the computer? can my family member register the iMac and apple care under his own name instead without my permission?

    Thanks in advance!

sending in the UPC does not register the computer to you; that is done when the owner turns it on and fills in his or her information.

should I write down the UPC since I'm going to send it off or can the owner retrieve it somewhere in the box? again i haven't opened it yet.

If by "write down the UPC" you mean the serial number, then yes, that will be physically on the mac and available in "about this mac" under the apple menu. If you mean the other random numbers on the UPC then sure you could write them down (or take a picture of the UPC) but I don't know why you would need them.

well, I'm not sure what I really need. I just want to make sure I get the rebate so I'm justgoing to take the UPC from the iMac box and send it out.

I'm just worried that my cousin wont be able to use apple care because I took the UPC. I'm not exactly sure how apple care works and what we need for it to register to that particular computer.

what do you suggest i do?

If your worry is applecare, then don't (worry). Removing the UPC in no way whatsoever effects your ability, or your cousin's ability, to register for applecare or get service.

I've cut out UPCs for rebates on several macs in the past, as have several friends and family members. There has never been any problem with applecare. Really, there's no need to worry - this is apple's promotion and apple's warranty, and one does not invalidate the other.

    Cut, send, and enjoy! :)
