But it got me thinking: Maybe Inception will happen. Remember the drooling at the mouth fanboys going on about "The difference is NIGHT AND DAY...I just came!!!" when speaking of Blu ray over DVD. What happens now with 4k? Is the difference Day and Night? It cant be Night and Day twice over....can it??

Over even 3 times. I noticed the largest improvement when the media changed over from VHS to DVD. When I play a BD and a DVD on the same screen the difference is noticeable but not significant like it was coming from VHS. There is, of course, very little difference in the feature set of BD and DVD apart from picture and sound. They are both random access optical disc based media. In fact, DVD is sometimes much better as the movie loads faster. Streaming is where its at these days and taint no way twixt heaven and hell that 4k is going to be streamed anytime within the next few years. I think video has reached its "good enough" resolution for some time with 1080p.

LOL!

Blu-ray is dead. This is a 4K/8K era. I never understood all the Apple critics dissing Apple because no BD in Macs when 4K/8K trumps Blu-ray.

I am looking forward to a thinner iMac sans optical drive.

Blu-Ray is dead? Try telling the world.

As I understand it Blu-Ray sales exceed digital downloads.

Good thing 9to5mac was correct back in June the last time they predicted the iMac models based on SKUs.

My June 2012 iMac is awesome.

I'll believe they're new iMacs when I see them...

Correct. It's rumors...

I feel kind of the same, but lets hope things are diferent this time. I guess it's like an earthquake: the more time passes, the more likely to happen.

By the way, being new in this Apple wonderworld, I wonder: would these people in Apple let us know in case new iMacs were to be released in, let's say, 6 months? Would they be so "nice" to keep it secret? Doesn't such a delay over widely spread rumors affect their sells? My questions prove i'm a real newbie, right?

Apple is notoriously tight on info about future products. Its the raison d'etre of MacRumors. Most purchasers do zero research and have no clue about impending updates.

Blu-ray is alive and well.

And here come the 4K Blu-ray movies:

Good luck downloading those 4k videos from iTunes. Your ISP will be on your back.

Wow! Folks are still sensitive about Blu-ray. I have been free of physical media for quite sometime. Now I can't help but laugh at the fools lined up in front of the local Red Boxes. Some people just don't get it. *shakes head*

Time for me to go watch the Walking Dead Season 3 premiere, commercial free, and in HD from iTunes (I have "cut the cord" as well by ridding myself of Comcast's horse manure service). :D

Be interesting to see what happens to the refurbished 2011 prices once the new 2012 model is out...

Hopefully the move to SSD across the range isn't going to make the entry level i5 ivy too expensive... otherwise those perfectly awesome 2011 i5 refurb's may make it the sensible option.

----------

As far as Optical media goes... yeap definitely dieing.. has been for a long time. Can't remember the last time I watched a Blu-Ray disc... owning a PS3 / Sony Vaio / and PC all with Blu-Ray drives... must be 12 months easy.

You said Blu-ray is dead and many of us were pointing out your comment was completely inaccurate.

It might be dead to you, but for many of us it's still the best way to enjoy a movie.

Not dead (walking or otherwise ;) but definitely dieing... it's all in the stream now... we need reliable Fibre and 4G asap.

The rumor floodgate has opened for the iMac. Excellent.

Now hopefully we retain the ability to upgrade ram...

This! As long as swapping out RAM relatively easily and HD's not so easily but still doable, then I think the majority of people will be happy.

Its cheaper then renting for the iTunes store :( If the rental was cheaper, I'd do just Apple Movie Rentals, I think they need to lower prices.

What I don't mind apple doing for the 27" imacs, is to set the resolution so that images appear sharper and clearer, not smaller. Files appear so comically small that I already have to set all my documents to 200% magnification anyways.

Any way to do this while saving pixels?

Nothing wrong with this. Better to have the option than not.

First, how urgent is your need? If not very urgent, I'd cancel.

If there's an update (and it's still in the category of rumor), at a minimum it'll support USB 3.0 which provides cheaper high speed connectivity than Firewire 800 or Thunderbolt.

And even if you look at it and go "meh", there will probably be current models in the clearance area for a discount. Won't be a huge discount, but money is money.

Of course, this rumor may not be true, so next Tuesday the same choices will be there for iMacs as now, so you just lose some time.

If you don't cancel - let us know if your iMac is delayed in shipping by a week. If so - they're probably holding the order and will give you the newer model. Which will be pretty good confirmation that there are iMac updates. (Apple often holds old orders when a new product is about to be announced, to avoid dealing with returns.)

Old models will be discounted between $200 and $400.

I just received an email from Apple this morning stating my custom 27" iMac order I placed last week has been delayed 2-3 weeks.
Seems to me they will substitute my order for the newer model being announced next week which happens quite often when new models are imminent.

Did you order an i7 upgrade? The default versions are available at apple.ca for immediate shipping. The RAM, HDD/SSD, and GPU upgrades are still at 2-4 days. They only involve installing/swapping components. The i7 upgrade is 2 - 3 weeks. That upgrade requires a mainboard change.

If the 2012 iMac has the same chassis, but with updated components, I can see them shipping a new one with equivalent specs. If there's a whole redesign, I think they should provide options and pricing before shipping. At present market pricing, they could provide 32GB RAM and 512GB SSDs at the same price points as the previous 16GB and 256GB upgrade options. Then again...

I think I'm happy to hear that. I was ready to order one of the 2012 models (the Apple web site was citing 2 to 4 days) and buy one of the new ones after the first of the year to put it on next years business tax deductions). But - I was really figuring it would be next year before they actually released a new iMac anyway.

I'm ready. I'm still on my old 2008 iMac and have been chomping at the bit (so to speak) for the new model. Now comes.... What will the specs be and what ports will it have...

There is a big difference in quality between an HD download on iTunes and a Blu-Ray. Both audio and video.

I don't know of ANY downloads that have HD Audio on them.

I want to do this but I'm concerned about the what to do with the thermal sensor. How did you handle it?

Be careful. I was recently screwed out of almost $700 on a used iMac (eBay) that a previous owner had replaced the hard drive in. This took out the power supply and the back-light - which required replacing the whole LCD panel!!! There's a great example of the stupidity of always pushing for smaller and thinner. A $700 - and perfectly good - 27" LCD panel replaced because of a $5 back-light controller chip that couldn't be replaced :(

Anyway, not only did Apple charge to fix this, but because it had work done by someone not authorized by Apple, they wouldn't even give ANY GUARANTEE - NOT ONE DAY - on the new power supply and LCD panel!

So, if you fix anything yourself, you void all existing AND FUTURE warranties!!!

If I'd spent $700 on a used iMac and found out that it was in unusable condition - I'd have protested to the seller and if that failed to eBay.
