iMac Rev. B - Fan Noise

My fan, for the first time in it's 3 month life, started revving v. high. I think there was some unclosed drivers that was killing the processor, as Safari was painfully slow as well. I have since lost internet connection at home. I'll retry it when I get home, I'm not expecting anything other than the normal silent runnings, but I have never heard the noise levels as describe by those above.

I have had my Rev. B 17 inch iMac (1.5 gigs ram) for a week now and it is loud...

I have a rev. A 1.8GHz 17" iMac with the "RC plane" noise issue and have been following this issue on Macintouch since I bought it last October.

One thing that seems to help is paired RAM. You might want to consider either 1GB or 2GB of RAM, but I would stay away from 1.5GB.

I bought a 20" 2Ghz iMac to replace my 800Mhz G4 iMac with a 15" screen. Comparatively, the new one is actually quieter. I have both systems running Tiger 10.4.1 and they both have 512Mbytes of memory. I noticed the differential when I was doing the firewire xfer from the old to the new. That said, they are both much quieter than my homebrew PC which is not overclocked with an AMD XP 2500+ (Barton) processor. In the long run, they are disturbing when I try to sleep but otherwise innocuous. It might help to actually have people measure the ambient noise level and then the noise level with the systems on. Compared to the functionality, this just is not an issue for me.
