You guys are great :D

What a horrific computer. It's not even the Mac purist in me... that really is a foul machine. Pentium 4? The last Pentium 4 I had could heat a open concert.

I am not one to usually bash the appearance of a product, but I first saw this a few days ago and thought I would need to bleach my eyes. It really is ugly. And not just "Ugly compared to Apple (which it is), but ugly as in an affront to all that is good and decent in the world. Take this back to the 70's when PC's were just getting started and people would have chucked the whole idea and stuck with HP calculators.:p

Sure it's ugly, but better than Gateway's attempt:

Or Sony's overpriced, underpowered attempt:

And people wonder why Macs cost just a bit more.

Amazingly, the Profile 6 is actually more expensive than the iMac 20", has half the RAM, an ancient Pentium D, and Intel Integrated video instead of dedicated video, and is of course big fat and ugly.

It always amazes me that other computer makers can get such a simple concept so utterly utterly wrong.

Slim and elegant, how hard can it be?

I'm actually having an engaging chat with the Gateway online sales chat thing. I'm pretending to be someone who is "comparing" the iMac and the Gateway and I know nothing about computers...

I'll post snippets of the conversation eventually...

The computer just looks so fake from that image! It truly does not look real, like some fantasy futuristic sci fi type computer thingy (from the front anyway). From the back / any other view that isn't directly looking at the front it just looks like an amateur engineer's pet project gone terribly wrong :p

I love it, but their website and all of those ****ing popups pisses me off. I can't wait to buy!

I have decided not to wait for the true VidPod, upcoming iPhone, redisigned MacBooks, soon-to-be announced Mac Tower Mini or one of any other number of Apple goodies in the pipeline and just get me one of these Crystal 950 PC thingies -- and by PC I mean 'Pure Crap'

:p

I know, I know...sarcasm is not becoming:D

P.S. - Does it come in other colours?

all your apple are belong to us.

You're a sad, sad bloke.

Just thought I'd say that.

Hehe... It looks like an ashtray from a 1985 Datsun.

This is the best alternative to the iMac I've seen so far. It's a much smaller computer, with the keyboard integrated as well. It folds up against the display, leaving the screen partially uncovered which then changes to a clock/calendar/screensaver type look. Not perfect, but at least it's trying to do something different. This photo was taken in the Sony Store in Ginza last month.

It actually ended up quite interesting, we touched on many subjects such as viruses (Gateway person insisted Apple's claim of no viruses was false), features (I had to prove to the Gateway person I was looking at a desktop and not a laptop by showing him a link because he didn't believe a $1199 desktop Mac would have a built in camera, 802.11g networking, and Bluetooth included in the base price), and configuration (the Gateway actually came with half the RAM for example): after spending a long time comparing the machines we finally got down to which one was *better* which the Gateway person insisted the Gateway was, and this is sort of how it went:

Me: you're honestly telling me you would buy the more expensive yet slower computer with less features and a bigger case?
Gateway: it's two completely different systems it's like comparing apples and oranges
Me: ok let's pretend there is no OS and all we know are the specs and price of two complete mystery computers which would you buy
Gateway: well then obviously yes the cheaper system
Me: let's even pretend they cost the same which they don't
Gateway: they're two completely different systems
Me: but they do the same stuff only differently
Gateway: well Windows is easier with how everything works, how files are organized etc...
Me: no it's only easier for you because you already know it, all you have to do is spend a little time learning the new system
Gateway: but it's totally different
Me: So you're saying that you'd wouldn't buy the less expensive faster computer with more features and a thinner case that does the same thing only differently simply because you don't want to learn how to use it? That's ridiculous!
Gateway: it's like saying I like Ford and you like Chevy each system is good for each of us
Me: sure if I like Chevy and you like Ford, we should both be able to agree a BMW offered at the same price is the better choice
Gateway: Apples are not like BMWs

Anyway it pretty much wrapped up with this Gateway person still clinging to their Profile 6 ugly thing, but I actually got this person to say they would do some research on the iMac and gave me contact information to pick the conversation back up when this person knows more about it later today. Exciting!

Stop harassing Gateway.

(Unless it is to ask whether they have any old Amigas lying around for sale.)

as much as that conversation with the gateway rep was pretty entertaining, i gotta sympathize with that guy. he prolly already hates his job and that bit was a good reason why. good stuff though. :D
