I was surfing the internet just a few minutes ago and all of a sudden I heard a loud pop/crack and the iMac screen tilt went straight down. And now, the screen won't tilt back up or to any angle without falling back down.

Clearly the tilt mechanism part just broke and now the screen has no support to hold it up... and of course Apple store near me doesn't have an appointment available until Tuesday... 4 days from now...

Anyone else have this problem and/or a solution? I guess I'm gonna schedule Tuesday and also try tomorrow for a walk-in... but according to searches it looks like they're gonna have to order a part and take the computer for a few days... which is just absurd for this type of repair... this should be a 20 min fix... and obviously its a design flaw since the internet is covered with these accidents... they should at least have parts in the store ready.

I hope this helps!

Hello,
Yes, that sounds like a bit of a nightmare. I have never had this issue, but it sounds like the joint between the computer and the stand has just become loose, or something along those lines.
I advise that you call up Apple Support, or use the online Live chat system and explain to them what has happened, and see if they have any advice for what to do.
You will probably need that appointment, and they might need to take your computer away, but it should definately be included in your warranty.
That said, the support operator may be able to give you some advice as how to fix this issue yourself, and you could always resort to good old http://www.YouTube.com (had to do that myself many times).

Hope you get your computer fixed,
Prof

Thanks for the response and yeah, I talked to them and they set me up the appointment. What's sad is that if they end up taking the computer for a few days for something that should be fixed within minutes. But because they don't stock parts... it's gonna take days probably.

I plan on trying a walk-in tomorrow AM. If that doesn't work... Tuesday evening...

Feel sorry for you. Good luck in getting it fixed :)

Thanks! Ha! It scared me! I was reading online and all of a sudden POP noise and the computer screen just gave out... I thought my cat jumped up on it from behind...(im in the dark).

But clearly this is a design flaw. Like I said, just google it... a lot of findings will come up with the same descriptions as I told.

Ha! Certainly sounds scary!!!

Sounds like the tension spring broke. Unlike the older iMacs which the stand could be easily removed, the new thin iMacs require complete disassembly as the mechanism is inside, and then it has be be taped (glued) back together. Thus, it isn't a 10 minute job!

In the mean time ... simply put a chunk of foam or something between the stand and the back of the screen (don't block the air vents) to set a useable angle for your viewing until you can get it fixed.

What year iMac is it? is this the newer design or the older design and also is it a 27" or 21" ?

I just had the same thing happen to me last night. Heard a pop and the screen will not stay in position. Were you able to get your's fixed?
