When I shut down iMac (27" 2016 early version) a screen with distorted colours appears and shuts down. This does not happen every time I shut down the system. I think it appears when I do not shut down iMac for several days, instead I normally put it into sleep mode.

I tried to take a photo of the screen but I could not as it flashed about 1 sec and turns off.

I wonder whether this is normal when not shutting down iMac for a significant period of time or not.
Anyone is having the same issue?

Managed to take a photo of the screen today.

This started for me late '15 27, with the Sierra release and forward..again on occasion and only on shutdown. Nuisance but doesn't seem to hurt anything. Maybe a wonky kext or something...

I took my iMac to Apple genius and it went to repair. They told me it could be the logic board which is causing this issue as gpu was not the cause.

No, the genius guy wasn't actually a genius. I was informed that it could be logic board issue. I am going to collect iMac tomorrow so I will ask what was the issue and what has been repaired.

Unless this happens prior to Sierra then I think it can at least be controlled by software patches. In any case still happens as of the latest Sierra beta build. At least it doesn't happen during normal use and only shutdown/restart on occasion. There must be something going on in the shut down process that likely has something to do with a kext that would affect the display that triggers this. More of a nuisance than anything else, but at least a few of us have this bug.

It could also be a logic board issue. I'm still within the 14-day return window so will likely just return mine.

Should have just waited for software update then? But does Apple aware of this bug? Anyway mine went to repair and got a text today that it has been repaired and ready to be collected. If it is a software issue then what would Apple have done to repair? Maybe replacing a logic board?

That is what the genius guy told me. Diagnosis run at the Apple store showed nothing is wrong. Maybe they will replace the logic board?

It'd be interesting to find out what exactly they repaired. This def sounds like a hardware issue, esp the fact that it's intermittent. In any case, mine is going back.

leoskkang,
I'm curious to know, Have you had the issue since having the logic board replaced?

I have collect iMac today and turned on and off for about 30 times to see if the issue is gone or not. For now it is seemed that the issue has been resolved.

The guy at the Genius told me that the logic board was replaced. I asked him whether it was refurbished one or not. He said it was a new one but I believe it could be a refurbished one :p
At least a distortion is not occurring so I am happy for now. I will update if it occurs in the future. Apple care paid off.

I'm curious about this issue as well. I just received my 5k iMac last week and noticed it did this upon shut down (intermittently). I'd hate to have to go in and repair it less than a week after receiving it.

But any ideas on why only on shut down? What is going on graphically upon shutdown?

I'll get this screen after a fresh install OSX then it seems to not come back for a long while. I think it is something Sierra related.
