I'm planning to use my 2009 27" in target display mode for a gaming PC, I know that the USB ports on the back of the iMac will not be seen by the PC but what if I were to run a USB A to A cable between the PC and the iMac, would the PC then see the USB ports on the back of the iMac as a USB hub so I don't have to keep swapping the keyboard/mouse between 2 machines? I dont especially want to have to use 2 keyboards/mice.

No, that will not work, as the USB ports are in use by Mac OS X, which is running while you use the iMac in Target Display Mode.
Why not get a KVM switch or something like Teleport, but working with Windows too?

logmein is pretty good too although idk if you could use the mouse/keyboard shared between the two computers.

Your options are a KVM, or Synergy, if you can get that working with that setup. I was actually wondering if it was possible for Synergy to work with target display mode.

KVM switch is a great idea, pretty cheap too. Thanks for the idea mate.
