iMac, then upgrade processor?

I've been reading a lot of posts where people are saying that they will buy an iMac and drop in the Merom processor when it comes out. Will that void the warranty? And if I did decide to change the processor, how exactly would I go about doing that, take it to an Apple store or something? I'm just confused because I thought the only thing upgradeable on the iMac was the memory, since it is a closed case. Anybody know anything about changing the processor? Thanks in advance for the replies.

Oh, and any idea how much it would be to upgrade, if possible?

There was a post a while back about dropping a 2.16GHz CoreDuo into an imac. To do this you would have to go to a PC shop or any coreduo dealer, buy the merom/coreduo, open the case up yourself (voiding the warranty) Replace the original CPU with the new one, re assemble it back together, and pray it boots up correctly. I personally would not advise it.

It already has a Core Duo, you must mean Core Duo 2.

You can send it into a specialist to do it for you, maybe even an Apple store. I bought an iMac, and it's on its way right now. I plan to do what you're saying and drop in a new processor later on if I feel like I need to.
