iMac to HDTV no audi

Purchased 21.5 " iMac 2 mo back. It has Lion. Trying to hook up using adapter from Thunderbolt to cable and into HMDI in 42" 1080p Plasma Panasonic TV. Video normal. Audio comes out of iMac speakers but no surround sound (Sony setup) through TV. Called care line and went to Apple Store 2Xs. They could not help. Who can help me or send me in the proper direction. I read 20 pages or so here but could not locate an answer. I am a beginner.

The adapter has to support Audio for this to work. Check yours to see that it does.

If so, your System Preferences>Sound>Output should be set to the device.

And I think in your Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup you should make sure the output format is 44100 hz on the device.

This, plus try logging out and back in after connecting your Mac to the TV. That helped me when my MBA just didn't send the audio over HDMI to my TV.

What the 2 said above....this should fix your problem. Sometimes i have to to do this. Don't know why this happens on/off
