Hi, I've recently just purchased a 24' and the first thing I noticed was how warm it gets. Could anyone please tell me where I find the box with all the information about its temperature etc please? I haven't learnt my way around this yet.
Thanks a lot.

Hi! Welcome to the Mac world :)

Well the green and black box is called iStat and it's a widget you can load into dashboard. Address: http://www.islayer.com/index.php?op=item&id=7

The other information is from OS X. Go to "About this Mac" in the :apple: menu and then click on the more information button. This will give you a rundown of what hardware you have in your computer.

If you want to cool down your Mac you could always run SMCFanControl. This will obviously not fix any issues your machine potentially has, but will at least reduce the temperatures in the interim.

SMCfancontrol is too much effort;

use iMacFanControl - fit and forget!

As I just found in the last thread about imacs hot hot hot!

Me said:
I have just been trialling this over the last few days, and can say I'm a very happy bunny. It was developed for the Macbook pro, and adapted by another developer for the iMac, and we thank them muchly.

It effectively does for you what you would achieve by watching Temp Monitor like a hawk and actively adjusting SMCfancontrol continuously.

I've found that the preset minimum temps with minimum fan speeds caused too much fan noise, but hedging them in to 40degC min and 80degC max, causes a quiet system on web-browsing, with temps in the region of 40degC (HDD 45) and when using graphics and cpu loading, the temps barely rise, but the fans do rise to the occasion!

At last the temp response system apple should have delivered.

Now I can rest easy.

All we wait for is Apple to wake up and include this in 10.5.6 or something.

Im about to try a program called smcFanControl I will right back and let you know if it works...
I have my iMac 27" 2 core @57ºC... and I bought it 3 days ago

Ups, sorry for the post before! I just tested smcFanControl.. Great program.. from 57ºC down to 41-43ºC.

I recommend it!!

i would not worry so much about temperatures , just convince yourself that apple did know what they were doing when they setup the fans and the smc ,
as i assume they employ some qualified technicians too which dont make up some figures as they go along , and its the nature of a cpu and gpu under normal use to get hot

ok aluminium is good for heat transfer but copper is better ok much heavier , but the iMac is a desktop so weight doesn't really matter , but i think silver would be the very best option for heat transfer away from the cpu and gpu and it has such a nice color (silver i mean ), and a mesh cage made out of gold for the harddrive would shield the harddrive from the heat coming from the cpu and gpu away from the harddrive ,ok a bit more expensive these options , but on the other hand you would get most of your cash back on resell even after years , if you would sell at the right time you even have a good chance to get more cash back then you initially bought the iMac for ;)

There is also likely quite a bit of difference between the current mid-2010 designs and the 2008 designs the original poster was talking about.

what did you use to see the temps ?

what did you use to see the temps ? and everything ??:D

istat pro is the most common used widget to see the temps and all other info ,
but for temps alone a app called temperature monitor will do the trick and it tells you the max temps apple thought now the fan should really kick in to cool the iMac down :D

and dont forget cleaning the iMac INSIDE after at least a year is recommended and will lower the temps again when all the dust is gone , and no , there is no other way as opening the iMac to get the heatsinks of CPU and GPU clean of dust , with a vacuum cleaner on the vents you only get a very small proportion of dust thats inside , the rest is still blocking airflow to cool the heatsinks of CPU and GPU
