Sure. I agree that this is a possible good use for a touch interface. That was the point of my post.

I also think that this is too niche of a use to imagine Apple releasing such a computer. It would be very useful for an artist to have a Mac with a touch sensitive screen built in. But it would be expensive and sell relatively few units. Apple doesn't pursue this kind of niche market often.

As for "keeping up with competitors," 1.) those computers are not selling. It's not a good idea to emulate competitor's failures. And 2.) Apple rarely releases hardware just to match products already on the market. These boards are full of criticism of Apple for exactly that--not bothering to match competitor's hardware. Search for the large screen iPhone for example. It's a really obvious upgrade that Apple declines to do.

I posted once. I think you need to review the definition of "persistent." :)

Ok you have a point there :)

I'm just hate this 'if you don't like apple deciding for you then shop elsewhere' mentality. I would like it if they provide more options. Not necessarily for 2012 but in the future in general. I like Unix and i've worked on Linux but OS X is a developed platform. I don't like apple for the branding (in fact hate that part) or for the hardware, its for the OS.

Sorry about accusing you, wrong person lol! I read all those comments and quoted the wrong person. So many people don't want touch screens but its as if they don't want anyone else to have them either! As appose to not minding if its an option since many will put use to them.

Apology accepted.

As for Apple and options, a lot of people say the same thing, and now that Cook is in charge, maybe you'll get your wish. It's also possible that you'll not like what you get if Apple goes that direction. Offering more options might mean diluting the care and engineering that goes into each model, and it doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the computer you want. Who is to say that the additional options will include the one that *you* specifically want?

It would be great if Apple made a computer that was perfect for me, but it would be less great if Apple made a thousand different models that were perfect for 1000 different people. Firstly, even among 1000 choices, it's quite possible that the one I want still isn't there. Secondly, that kind of diffused product line is what got Apple in trouble in the 90s. It's much harder to create 1000 exceptional products than a dozen or so. And at the end of the day, it's that kind of manically focused design and engineering that make Apple different from Dell.

If you live in the US, think of the cold cereal aisle. On the face, there are a crazy amount of options there. But underneath the surface, all you have is the choice between what kind of artificial flavor you want with your sugar, and what cartoon character you want on the box. Lots of choice, very little difference. I'm not saying that's necessarily what would happen if Apple opened up a bit, but I'd rather have one good alternative to all that crappy cereal than 100 more flavors of Captain Crunch.

And why do you hate Apple for the branding? It's like hating Manchester United because they insist on playing with a goal keeper.

I think there is over emphasis on the options suggestion. I'm not talking about catering products for individuals. Just like they provide a screen resolution between glossy and matte screens for MBP, they can do the same for iMacs except for touch and not touch for example.

That is not catering a product for a certain individual but more so for a group of individuals.

Another example would be the iphone and ipad. Its not that much to ask to have it come in two different sizes. Of course its not easy! but its doable.
These are examples of the options i'm talking about ....

I don't hate the apple brand itself, I dislike branding products that provide an 'image' of a person. I don't want to pay more for a badge on a shirt or phone but instead I will pay more cause of what the actual product is.

I'm just wondering why there isn't much talk about an iMac Touch for 2012?
It seems only perfect with the way much of Lions interface and the release of the Dell, HP, and Sony Touch desktops.
Any thoughts anyone?

You bring up a valid point. Apples announced the Post PC era and what better way than to make an iMac like the terminals at so many retail stores.

It's all about iOS anyway, so Apple could put cheap processors in it, keep the high price to maintain their margins. Advertise it as Magical & Revolutionary, and prepare for massive waiting lines outside the stores. Then film their commercial showing happy people in line :)

I'll stick to OS X while it lasts.

If that happens then i'll move to FOSS systems.

Am I the only one that sees iOS as a dumbed down OS?

Its clear that its intentions where more for profit reasons as appose to a productive OS. iOS has a ton of potential, but they ripped it up and are selling what should of already been in the OS as apps!

Like windows, imagine paying for solitaire and a ton of other programs, cause that is what they are, applications. I don't know why everyone gets so excited by purchasing a $1 app? By the time you actually setup your system your looking at a $100 OS ...

No I'm with you - I personally don't consider Lion a leap forward, more a dilution. Given the choice I would have stuck with SL. I also own an iPad and to date I have purchased a grand total of 0 apps. I have downloaded a few free ones and I do mean a few and that's about it. The iPad does what I need it to do without the need for apps. Apple need to take great care with just how far they go with their urge to sell sell sell rather than simply selling the right products.

Steve Jobs said that Apple will never make a touch desktop because it wouldn't be ergonomic. Can you imagine holding your arm up to touch the iMac for a long time? not fun...
And this is just another fail of touch interfaces. I remember seeing touch-screens in like 2000 and 2001 when I was a kid... it was hard to 'click' on things that were small with your finger, and again using the screen in an upright position IS uncomfortable after a while. Not to mention the screen gets messy very easily... people still have to come to grasps with the fact that we humans are very messy, dirty creatures.

Touch screen has come along way. You don't only have to use it in its upright position, its not only black or white you know.

Not to mention the screen gets messy very easily... people still have to come to grasps with the fact that we humans are very messy, dirty creatures.

Speak for yourself  I guess we know your little secret now :D

I'll speak for you as well! You probably farted some time today, didn't you? You know, in order to smell something, particles of the substance have to physically land inside your nose. I'm not trying to gross anybody out here, I'm just pointing out that in contrast to the incredibly sterile machines we believe out computers to be, humans are very dirty entities just like any other animal.

We have thousands of microscopic bacteria and whatnot on our faces at all times, we're constantly shedding dead skin and hair follicles all over the place, and of course we all (or at least most of us...) make a daily trip to the toilet to rid our bodies of a wide variety of waste products. These are all examples of 'uncleanliness' that are part of what make us human, and that's the point I was originally trying to make.
