iMac Upgrade Question....Advice Needed

got down to 6 seconds now back up to 2 hours and 30 mins!

I wonder if the hard drive is beginning to fail and/or has some bad sectors on it.

Tried repair disk and all appears well.

Well it was sitting there all night trying to download the installation components without success. There is an error log but I can't seem to save it.

Is there a correct way of partitioning the HDD before I attempt installation again if that's the problem?

I have 1 partition (GUID).

As an update I pulled the USB stick out the back and restarted. It's now again downloading the additional components. It got down to 0 seconds remaining (yes zero!) and is now climbing back up to 3 hours or so!

On the install log (it's still downloading additional components) I did see:

failed to verify InstallESD.dmg hdiutil verify failed

It's now retryting pisa (whatever that is)

For the primary partition for OS X you should be using 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled).'
